I think I saw a preview of it, and I assumed the ABC one would be bad.
Reading over peoples reactions to it, it sounds like it might be worth tivo-ing, so I can avoid the commercials on ABC for BOB's boner pills. (enzyte?)

Sounds like they screwed up some of the ways the legions are being portrayed, as being not a political power of themselves, and just sideline players. Also it looks like the writers are munging the concept of feudal kingly succession with the roman republic having been ruled by the first dictator for life. Octavian had to fight for his right to be caesar, and just being heir was not even close to being the second emperor.

The rise of Octavian could be interesting, though I prefer the 80 years prior to Octavian, having just slogged through the Colleen McCullough First Man in Rome series. I guess the NBC Caesar mini series covered that period(ugh)

Marius and Sulla and the generation before Caesar would be amazing.
Know of a good movie about that period?

She created a very strong Sulla character, even if he was a bit unbelievable, she conveyed how his low upbringing was at odds with his aristocratic blood right and his passion for power.

15. oh the ABC thing is just fluff

the long shots of the forum are beautiful though, but the whole thing misses the mark with the "british" sensibilities that are hardwired into the production.

Mark Anthony is w-a-y too old and his Julia is a sixty year old hag of a roman matron. Similarly, while the guy playing Octavius is pretty eye candy, his acting chops are pretty limited, and the storyline itself is more heaving bosom bodice (toga) ripper than historical documentary.
