Scouts Did Not Follow Protocol for Tents

By KRISTEN GELINEAU, Associated Press Writer
11 minutes ago

Four men electrocuted while pitching a dining tent at the Boy Scout Jamboree had ignored scouting teachings by putting the tent under a power line, a spokesman said Wednesday.

The Scout leaders also had taken the "somewhat unusual" step of hiring a contractor to help with the task, Scouts spokesman Gregg Shields said.

<snip>

The four leaders killed Monday were to be remembered Wednesday at a memorial to be attended by President Bush, but the evening's events were canceled because of the threat of severe thunderstorms and strong wind. Instead, Bush is scheduled to visit the Jamboree on Thursday.

<snip>

Those killed were Michael J. Shibe, 49, Mike Lacroix, 42, and Ronald H. Bitzer, 58, all of Anchorage, Alaska; and Scott Edward Powell, 57, who had recently moved from Anchorage to Perrysville, Ohio. Shibe had two sons at the Jamboree and Lacroix had one.

--------------

The cynic in me noticed where the victimes were from. Take it for what it's worth, but we have a pResident who won't attend the funerals of fallen American soldiers for a war HE started, but he is going the extra mile to be there for Boy Scout leadres. I'm not anti-Boy Scout... but they're not exactly giving their lives for *'s oil.

They can be Muslim, Hindu,or Jewish as well.

2. An accident in the scouts is more important than the troops he's
sent to their deaths?

He's f*cked up.

3. Since he had nothing to do with their deaths, he feels safe going.
Wouldn't catch him at a soldiers funeral....the parents would probably go for his throat.

5. "ignored scouting teachings by putting the tent under a power line"
These morons are definitely winning Darwin Awards this year. & why did they need a contractor to put up a tent? As a former Eagle Scout & avid outdoors person, these guys are (were)idiots.

6. Hate to sound callous
But it makes for a good photo op for the culture of birth crowd for the chimp to attend a children's funeral. Where it would be a bad photo op if he attend scores of troop funerals.

Note I do feel sorry for the grieving parents of the scouts and I wish them peace. And I ask the rwing talk show hosts to do the christian thing and leave them alone.

9. More then likely
Bush is attending to show the "softer" image and all that. I really don't know why he's attending these funerals when he doesn't bother to even publicially recognize the fallen from his illegal war. :mad:

11. This accident was big news here in Anchorage last night...
We can't figure out how they could have been so careless. I mean, we DO have powerlines in Anchorage, believe it or not, so they should have known to take more care around them. As for Bush's attendance at the funerals, I don't even know what to say.

12. Please understand, I'm not belittling their deaths.
A good friend of the family's and co-waorker of my mom was killed in a car accident on Friday. I am very sensitive to accidental deaths right now (and sorry for the family) but I am also so appalled that * is using this as a photo-op. I can not understand this man at all.

13. I've never had a problem with any president attending funerals
It just makes his attending this one so obvious compared to the ones he DIDN'T attend and should have.

14. Those are the guys I want teaching my kids to put up their tent
Yes, it's a terrible thing when people die needlessly but the first thing I thought of when I heard this was, "what the fuck were they doing putting up a tent so close to a power line?"

And now Bush wants to attend the funeral? What a piece of shit. That's all.
