I can't see many images that people post, and so I don't respond. Unfortunately, I usually forget to check those threads when I get home at night.

3. Here's my take:
This is a text-oriented forum, one where discussion is the main means of communicating information. People see a graphic, most probably don't realize how much time/effort goes into it, and unless it's really striking to them in some way, they probably just don't comment on it. I see the graphic up there, and yes, I think it's a good comparison, but I don't have anything to discuss about it, per se. And the more times you bring this particular issue up, the more you turn people off to responding, IMO. If you want critical feedback for graphics, you need to look for a graphics-oriented forum, or start a group here...

The last time you asked I was really nice, because I genuinely like your graphics.

But I hate feeling guilty because I'm not appreciative enough.

I think you'll get better results with some creative solutions, rather than being pushy and guilt-inducing.

27. nature of the beast...in a way.
I think the graphic or political cartoon is "hot" media -- that is, by nature it is driving at a conclusion, its close-ended. This is different from other types of art which invite interpretation. Political art has a very clear and uninterpretable message. Therefore, it does not easily invite interpretation or analysis. And that's ok, it would be unsucessful as political art if it was ambiguous.

But because of that, it is difficult to respond to...you either have to say "great!" which is a bit uncomfortable to do a lot of (note that not many text threads have people saying "great post", except those which are "hot" and drive to a conclusion. The ones that are more open ended and invite discussion survive longer, but have less people saying "great post".)

Also, art is subjective. Not everyone likes every work of art equally. People who don't like the work usually don't go out of their way to comment. In that way, they are being silently supportive, I suppose. And, people know that artists can sometimes be sensitive about their "babies" or creative works. Therefore, even if they had some discussion about the content of the work, or the issue, they're uncomfortable bringing it up for fear of offending the artist unnecessarily.

Or, there's people who are graphic artists by profession, like me, and feel a little awkward about giving high fives to other artists without getting into technical discussion that would bore other viewers. Also, I have always had a problem with lauding or critiquing work, as I tend to be overly honest in my assessment, since that's what I"D prefer, so I could learn something, but I find that there are many artists who when they ask your opinion of their work, only want to hear praise and get defensive if its anything but praise, and I find that awkward so I rarely go there.

However, you make a good point, so I will endeaver to comment in more graphic threads with at least an "atta-gender unspecific personage".

:)

31. That Is A Pretty Interesting Assessment. Hadn't Really Thought Of That!
I guess I really don't leave much to say but "yes or no" a lot of times.

I do frequently try to open the door with some additional text with some more open ended points. I've been doing more of that lately.

Thanks for getting back to me.

29. I misunderstood "WARNING GRAPHIC" to mean that it contained disturbing
images, such as war zone photos. I generally stay away from these becasue I already know what we are doing in Iraq and don't need to have my day ruined by the image of a chile with his legs blown off. I'm betting that a lot of people don't go to your threads for this very reason.

41. graphic artists are a highlight of DU
What lerkfish said. Good assessment. But I think we should perhaps consider a fostering a culture of commenting on graphics here at DU and here's why:

a) I've introduced a number of new people to DU and their first reaction is, "Wild! Those graphics are amazing,"and they tell me the reason they return is not just for the good information here, but to see more of the graphics.

b) It is a lot of work and effort to produce these graphics and the artist deserves some comment and feedback. I'll be doing more of that in the future.

c) Pictures ARE important. Anyone who has read John Berger's "Ways of Seeing" knows the graphic impact comes before words.

Also, re lerkfish's comment about being reluctant to get into a technical discussion, perhaps a thread could be devoted to the finer points in the graphic artists' forum.

Thanks for bringing this up. I've never seen you ask for feedback before and quite frankly, am disgusted with those seemed to think you shouldn't. It's their psychological problem if they feel "unappreciative." Don't let anybody put that monkey on your back.

Asking for feedback is a good thing. I once read a book that described the habits of the most intelligent people and asking for feedback was one of them.

The talent of graphic artists is one of DU's most treasured elements. Let's applaud and encourage them all we can.

There is some great stuff here! I'm happy to kick a thread when I see something I like, thanks for suggesting that.

I've saved several graphics to my hard drive. Is that bad? I don't use them except on occasion - like in a Print Shop greeting card - usually to my sister. It would be nice to have a DU gallery.
