13. He did it!
He flipped off the press! I saw the Jay Leno video and he flipped off the press. He really did. It's clear as day and it isn't no freakin pen either.

14. I just find it awkward to flip the finger when one faces the back
of the hand, as opposed to - as most of us do - when we face the front of the hand and the bent fingers.

Even in this one http://anon.salon.speedera.net/anon.salon/media/2004/10/BushUncensored.mov

But then, I don't have any experience in walking and flipping at the same time

7. bullhockey. i looked at it large and frame by frame and I dont see a pen.
Edited on Thu Jul-28-05 01:45 PM by bullimiami
I see exactly what it was purported to be in the first place. It IS the middle finger and the gesture goes along with it.

I think if we get to see video with some decent resolution it will become clear it is the finger.

the gesture is possible, the hand is turning. you can see knuckle of the index finger in the first couple of frames as his hand turns clockwise just as you would expect. try it raise your arm and see how your hand rotates.

12. Pencil.
Pencils can appear to be flesh colored. Has anyone here considered that?

18. Yeah because presidents always walk around with pencils!

If it were a writing instrument, it would be a pen. WTF would he need a pencil for? All he does is sign stuff. No one signs things in PENCIL.

But thanks for the funniest theory yet.

20. Pencils are beneath the Shrub-
Pencils are for us, the common folk to
try to balance our decreasing budgets against
his induced rising cost of living.
I agree, not a chance in hell the Shrub
would be carrying a pencil to a PC.

Is he arrogant enough to flip the press off?
Absolutely- he flips the rest of us off, so to speak,
everytime he opens his lying mouth.

Its the schrub being the schrub. Hes saying fuck you to the press.

What I can`t figure out is why ? They have had his back since before 2000.

Is this a Rove move to try to get us to think the press is with us ?

11. It wasn't a pen, look at the photo, the finger expands at the joint
Even in pixelated form, you can see a finger joint.

However, I don't know if it is the pointer or the middle...

17. Excuse me...but sure looks like FU to me
the White House is saying it was his THUMB?
That is one LONG thumb, and clearly in the
wrong place of his hand.
He is giving us the finger folks, and you know what?
Because he CAN.
What is anyone going to do about it?
We have been able to do nothing about
the rest of the abominations, why this one?

This is pretty chilling actually-
it is the gesture of someone who KNOWS
no consequence will apply.
The ultimate arrogance- the arrogance of
a total dictator.
He might as well as said, "Let them eat cake."

19. Yep.
Even if that WERE a pen, why in the world would he be holding it between his first and middle fingers? A substitute middle finger? That gives the SAME message anyway!

22. It was a FLESH-COLORED CRAYOLA!!!
(Are you old enough to remember when they had a caucasian crayon called 'flesh'? As if flesh is no other color! They had to rename it "peach" or something like that.)

Of COURSE it's a finger.

23. good point, Bouncy ...
That's quite an awkward way to hold a pen, if you're making a "victory" gesture with your fist. Clenching your fist around the implement, sure -- or if you're still holding it as if you're going to write with it, the pen would be sticking out towards the camera, not standing upright.

I could imagine Bush snortling to himself, figuring nobody would call him on this. He loves doing sneaky stuff like this (even his college buddies have mentioned that side of his personality).
