Updated List of Rove Witnesses and Interviewees
Edited on Thu Jul-28-05 04:47 PM by joemurphy
I've updated the list to include Glenn Kessler, a Diplomatic Reporter for the Washington Post, who was reportedly interviewed by the FBI in connection with the leaks.

The reference to Kessler was found in the following NYT article:

<http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/28/politics/28leak.html>

Here's a new update of the Rove case's witnesses and interviewees
The update was prompted by new revelations in the Washington Post and MSNBC. The WP reports confirm that John McLaughlin, Bill Harlow, Carl W. Ford, Jr. and an unnamed friend of Wilson's have testified before the grand jury. The WP reported that George Tenet had been interviewed but it was unclear if he had actually testified before the grand jury. The MSNBC report confirms that John Bolton testified before the grand jury.

This list is something I've put together from my Googling. If anyone has any additions or corrections, let me know. I'll post the list from time to time in the future as further information comes in.

4. I haven't seen any reports regarding Matthews.
It's logical to think he was at least interviewed, but I've tried to have reliable backup sources for everyone I list.

If you have a source on Matthews, let me know.

Reuters
State Dept. says Bolton truthful to Senate panel
Thu Jul 28, 2005 4:24 PM ET

By Vicki Allen

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The State Department on Thursday said U.N. ambassador nominee John Bolton told Congress the truth when he said he did not testify in the investigation of the leak of the identity of CIA operative Valerie Plame.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said Bolton's answer in March to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee was "truthful then and it remains the case now."

A spokesman for Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, the committee's top Democrat, said McCormack's statements did not resolve all of the questions. He said Biden was waiting for a written response from Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

~snip~

Questioned by reporters, McCormack recited the committee's questionnaire that asks whether a nominee "has been interviewed or asked to supply any information in connection with any administrative (including an inspector general), congressional or grand jury investigation, within the past five years, except routine congressional testimony."

But Biden's lastest letter to State contradicts this in only that Bolton was pulled into State's IG investigation of the Niger docs on July 18, 2003 but not Fitzgerald's investigation.

6. My inclusion of Bolton was based on MSNBC reports that
Bolton testified before the grand jury. Let's wait and see how the dust settles. It it's determined he didn't testify, I'll amend the list accordingly.

12. That's Not What Biden Says
July 28, 2005

The Honorable Condoleezza Rice Secretary of State Washington, DC
20520

Dear Madam Secretary:

It has just come to my attention that then-Undersecretary of State John Bolton was interviewed on July 18, 2003 by the State Department Office of the Inspector General in connection with a joint State Department/CIA IG investigation related to the alleged Iraqi attempts to procure uranium from Niger. This information would appear to be inconsistent with information that Mr. Bolton provided to the Committee on Foreign Relations during the Committee's consideration of his pending nomination to be Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

The Committee on Foreign Relations expects all nominees to provide to it accurate and timely information. Indeed, in submitting the Committee's questionnaire, all nominees are required to swear out an affidavit stating that the information provided is "true and accurate." It now appears that Mr. Bolton's answers may not meet that standard. I write, therefore, to request that you review this matter to determine whether incomplete or inaccurate information was provided by Mr. Bolton.

Thank you for your assistance.

Sincerely,

Joseph R. Biden, Jr. Ranking Minority Member

5. Very useful. Thanks. Questions:
What sources have stated Tenet testified, and which deny? Also, what does "Unconfirmed" mean here?

Can we get a version with citations and sources?

This is great work. Thank you again!:applause:

8. Unconfirmed are names that seem candidates
for having been involved in the investigation given their involvement in the Niger uranium matter but for which I've never been able to find any reliable confirmatory press references as to their having been interviewed or their having testified.

Regard them as possible names to watch for and no more than that.

If I get some time, I'll try to supply the sources for everyone I've listed.

10. Tenet was supposedly interviewed in connection with the
investigation. I haven't seen any saying he testified before the grand jury.

7. TPM wants to know about John Hannah.
Can anyone point me to an article that says that John Hannah, Cheney's senior national security aide, appeared in front of the grand jury or waived his confidentiality pledge? For instance, today's Bloomberg article and others I've seen mention Ari, Rove, McClellan, Matlin, Libby, Levine, Bartlett, and others as having appeared before the grand jury. But since I've been paying attention I haven't seen Hannah's name as someone who testified or provided a waiver.
Remember this story from UPI from February of 2004? It's lede said federal investigators had developed "hard evidence of possible criminal conduct" by Libby and Hannah and that Hannah was "the major player." Since then, I've seen lots of references to Libby and how he's waived his confidentiality pledge as Rove did. But what's the story with Hannah? Did he reluctantly testify? Take the Fifth? Or did he fold?

For what it's worth, my money says it was Hannah and Libby who were Novak's two original sources, but that Fitzgerald is also going after Rove for conspiracy, aiding and abetting, misprision of felony, and/or obstruction of justice -- particularly the latter if he and Novak were chatting it up in September of '03 as has been recently reported. And for those of you wondering, the IIPA specifically allows for those first three charges for someone who "had authorized access to classified information"
Remember, going back to Dana Priest's and Mike Allen's first story on the leak, it's always been clear that folks in the Administration, and presumably Fitzgerald soon after he started, knew exactly who the two sources were. Instead the questions have always been (a) what Fitzgerald can prove, (b) who else was involved, and (c) was there any coverup. For a federal prosecutor, the last two questions are just as important as the first, which is what we're seeing play out right now.
