1. Death by a Thousand Cuts: The Fight Over Taxing Inherited Wealth
On Saturday, July 30 at 8:00 am and Sunday, July 31 at 11:15 pm

Death by a Thousand Cuts: The Fight Over Taxing Inherited Wealth
Michael Graetz & Ian Shapiro

In "Death by a Thousand Cuts: The Fight Over Taxing Inherited Wealth," Yale University professors Michael Graetz and Ian Shapiro set out to find out why the estate tax was repealed in 2001 through broad bi-partisan support in Congress. The estate tax taxes inherited wealth and is paid only by the wealthiest 2% of Americans and has been in existence since 1916. The authors attempt through interviews with key players, to find out how the 2001 repeal of the estate tax was successful. The authors are joined by American Enterprise Institute scholars Kevin Hassett and Charles Murray.

Michael Graetz is a law professor at Yale University and an expert on tax policy. Ian Shapiro is a political science professor at Yale University as well as a political theorist.

Climate Crash: Abrupt Climate Change and What It Means for Our Future
John Cox

Changes in global climate are occurring at a rate much faster than had previously been estimated by scientists. Author John Cox writes about these changes and their potential effects on humanity as well as the rest of the natural living world. The author contends that such climate changes have the possibility of occurring within a single human lifetime and writes about the changes scientists are making in order to prepare themselves for a major climate shift in a minimum amount of time. Mr. Cox also looks at the ways in which scientists have examined our past to discover instances of rapid climate changes in the Earth's history.

John Cox is the author of "Storm Watchers" as well as "Weather for Dummies." He has worked as a journalist and reporter, covering science, environment, politics, and the effects of global warming.

6. directly related to the holocene extinction event
Look at what's going on in maritime ecosystems (particularly the mass dyings of birds and anoxic "dead zones") to see what's going wrong.

36. Did you watch?
Not a lot of info I didn't know, the point of his book seems to be - change may be happening faster than we think, and we will be caught unprepared if we continue to assume that climate change is a slow gradual process. Ability to adapt to swift and possibly severe changes will be the key.

More than "temperature change" the problem will be drought. (He had a great graph up that showed the last several thousand years of precip in North America - it was all over the place. I'll try and find it..) Food belts will no longer produce, a change of a few degrees will turn snow storms to rain. Result will be no snow pack to get through the summer, flooding in winter, drought in summer (note to self - built rain-catchers. lots of them).

7. state sponsorship, particular the US' role in such, needs to be exposed
For instance, the fact that "Al Qaeda" was a US-sponsored anti-Soviet operation in Afghanistan (with lots of foreign fighters, bin Laden himself was Saudi, not Afghani).

Saturday, July 30 BookTV

Most Terrorism is “homegrown”. Lack of necessities, social upheaval, lack of security. It’s not a ‘top down’ type of organization, as the bush administration thinks. Spreads out from local epicenters. The civil chaos in Indonesia opened the door for Al Qaeda before 9-11. Technique used in Colonialism too, paraphrasing Norman Mailer – ‘Let the locals destroy each other, then jump in when they are too weak to prevent you.

He was in Indonesia to write a story about the Nutmeg wars (before 9-11). Great story about getting on a ship to go see the nutmeg farm and turns out there were 600 jihadists on board going off to attack Christians about 50 miles from his destination. He considered jumping overboard, but his friend reminded him of the most important rule of Journalism. ‘If you don’t go, you’ll never know.”

Bit of Spice War history… Nutmeg – falsehoods – “medieval viagra’, protection against the black plague. True – prevents meat from rotting and gives flavor to very bland European food. Highly prized, 30,000% profits were possible, good reason to go to war. Spice wars were an early example of how local terrorism can spread and have a global effect. Now, with extremist Muslims using DVD and videos to recruit new members, spread is incredibly rapid, and helps explain why this ‘war on terror’ is so absolutely global.

After 9-11 and the bombings in Bali, he went back to try and find out how much the extremists had infiltrated the country. Felt like he was personally experiencing terrorism in his front yard in the US and his backyard after he had spent so many years there.

2001 – a jihad group was busted operating in Singapore. They had plans to bomb US, Australia, others.

bush said that Indonesia was the “2nd front of the war on terror”

In 2000 the public opinion of the US in Indonesia was 70% approval. (Canada was 72%). After Afganistan and the invasion of Iraq (2003) it is 15%. About the same today.
They do not hate us, but they DO NOT like the results of our actions over there, the destruction and suffering..

Q and A

Q – if we help them with education, aid, won’t we risk being seen as ‘propagandizing’ and enforcing ourselves on them? How do we avoid that, and can we?

A - It’s going to be difficult, and I don’t know if it can be prevented. The soul of Islam is at stake in their opinion (saving it from the extremists). We need to address the “Great Moderate Muslim Middle “ our values are basically the same. They need our help, they say. They feel they don’t have ‘social justice’. We need to keep the promises we made after the Tsunami, and that has not happened yet. $127 million was promised for education in 2003, will they get it?

Q – Islam came to Indonesia pretty peacefully in the 12th century and has been mostly peaceful since then. What caused this explosion 10 years ago of extremism?

A – The former leaders were very strict and managed to keep a lid on any movements, but when government collapsed, they moved in. Our not helping the military with $ because of their human rights violations has turned a lot of them against us.

Q – It seems our contradictions in policies over there contradict each other, and we are getting very confusing reporting in the media, Tsunami aid and the antagonism towards our soldiers being there to help.

A – The problem they have is very basic. They were a Dutch colony for 400 years, and having foreign soldiers boots on their soil rankles. “ Indonesia is a country very much on the political edge, and it’s not being reported” (in the media).

Q - How much did the financial crisis effect the spread of extremism there? Is it possible for the country to recover?

A - It definitely helped them gain footholds. But also opened doors for NGO’s and human rights groups. Could go either way. A man he was interviewing said “ You should be President. You are an American who listens”.

Q – For a long time it seemed that the people refused to admit that the JI (home grown group) was a terrorist group. What did you hear from them?

A – In the beginning they did refuse to accept or admit that, but most now realize it. There are some who still say they don’t even exist, they are a lie made up by the west. But the police take them seriously and keep a close watch on them.
Most people are very concerned that we in the west will see all of them as terrorists, when the extremists get all the media coverage, slanted as it is.

Q – “ Did you taste the fruit of the Nutmeg?” Where exactly did you go?

A – Fried, sliced, diced, mashed, roasted, etc.
Banda Islands. On the flight there he was cranky and travel weary and he had an old man evicted from his airplane seat. Turns out it was the Sultan of Banda.
Banda is ½ Christian and ½ Muslim, most of the Christians evacuated during the fighting, it’s safe enough now they are starting to move back. The Separatist movement seems to have died down now, and one big reason is the passage of the Local Autonomy law.

Why has South East Asia become the second front in Bush’s "war on terrorism"?
April 2002
Just months after the US military began bombing Afghanistan and toppled the Taliban regime, the Bush administration opened up what was dubbed in the American media “the second front” in the so-called global war against terrorism—South East Asia.
Since January, the US has dispatched 660 troops on a “training mission” to the southern Philippines, encouraged Singapore and Malaysia to hunt down Islamic fundamentalist militants and pressured the Indonesian government to do likewise. More American troops are arriving on the Philippine island of Basilan to carry out a series of construction projects to facilitate military operations.

8. China's current global status is an anomaly
Throughout history its global economic status has been proportional to its population. And this is as how it should be. India likewise has a similar share of global population.

We should and must get used to the idea of Chinese and Indian pre-eminence in global culture and the global economy. It is the share in global affairs due to the Chinese and Indian people.

The War on Truth: 9/11, Disinformation, and the Anatomy of Terrorism
Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed

Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed outlines the relationship between the West and radical Muslim groups like the Mujahideen in Afghanistan, the Armed Islamic Group (GIA) in Algeria, and the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) in Serbia. Mr. Ahmed says that these groups, parts of which are now affiliated with Al Qaeda, were used by the United States and Britain to further Western political and economic goals. He argues that a more complete investigation of this relationship is necessary to understand what happened on 9/11. Mr. Ahmed also talks about the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and the 1996 British attempt to assassinate Libya's Muammar Gaddafi in this light. This talk, held at American University in Washington, DC, was organized by the DC Emergency Truth Convergence (www.truthemergency.us). Includes Q&A.

Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed is executive director of the Institute for Policy Research & Development (www.globalresearch.org) based in Brighton, UK. He is the author of "The War on Freedom: How and Why America was Attacked, September 11, 2001."

The War on Truth: 9/11, Disinformation, and the Anatomy of Terrorism
Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed

rec. 7-23-05

Announcer – Today is the 3rd anniversary of the Downing Street Memo, over 300 town meetings and house parties going on as we speak. A fitting day to discuss the truth of 9-11.

Ahmed spoke at length (I fell asleep during the first broadcast!) about the numerous ties we have to terrorist groups, not just the US authorities but UK, Palestine, Pakistan, Algerian, Philippines. He detailed the connections between 1993 WTC bombings, the ‘Blind Sheik’. We had informants in his organization, we knew the bombing was going to take place. Plan was make to replace bomb with a dud, then it was ruled as too risky, so they did nothing. Informant was secretly taping all his conversations, these were found before 9-11, boxes and boxes of tapes, videos, plans, blueprints. They were not opened until after 9-11. Our connections to these groups were very much a deterrent to serious investigations of 9-11, and how it came to be.

1995 Paris bombing was blamed on the JIA, yet documents show there is no evidence they were involved, there is evidence the Algerian Military was. Memo says they cannot afford for this info to come out, large oil and gas interests in Algeria.
The main terrorist group in the Philippines and their Military are involved w/ Al Qaeda factions. Again, they are close allies of the US.

Africa, Libya - was revealed in UK press that David Shivers (former mI-5) says that in 1996 the UK government paid $1000,000 to an Al Qaeda faction to assassinate Moammar Kadafi. Brit government denied it and prosecuted him under secrecy laws, he went to jail.
Book written by French Intel. “Forbidden Truth” tells how ‘most wanted’ man (in bombing of US embassy ) was living in the UK.

Paradigm of this War on Terror – we have all these connections that show we sponsor them in so many ways. This is a systematic problem perpetrated by the US and UK govs. for at least 30 years, not just an invention of the Bush Admin or the Neo-cons. Direct connections between Intel failures and reluctance to investigate. 9-11 hijackers supposedly trained on US bases? How did they get clearance? Holsinger tried to investigate. US denied they were the same people. He said but this guy’s age matches. and his bio. Can I contact him to verify he is not the same person? “We can’t release that info.”

9-11 was not an Intelligence failure, it was a Political failure.

German newspaper reports that Echelon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eschelon pegged chatter 6 months and 3 months before 9-11. So they knew it was being planned. In May 2001 FBI agents had info that something was going to happen in lower Manhattan – no reports make it to DC.

Electronic intercepts of Bin Laden warning his contacts to get out of Afghanistan and go to Pakistan on Sept. 10th because ‘something’ is going to happen. They reported these tapes were not translated in time because of the backlog. Yet they caught ‘ sympathizers’ celebrating and filming the WTC the morning of Sept. 11 by audio surveillance, that audio was even on the news by that evening. The Pentagon had enough info that they made preparations, but why was Capitol Hill not informed?

Q & A

Q – Transition from Cold war events has resulted in Military expansion and Privatization. Has this created the War on Terror?
A – It has created a base for it. Al Qaeda is a multi-state sponsored group, not just one helping create this. They never would have had the strength or the ability to pull this off without all these connections to various governments and militaries.

Q – There have been reports of people being fired from ISI, Pakistan Gov. for possible involvement in 9-11, these are referred to as failed states. It seemed one part of their government was unable to control or know what another part was up to. Using this to compare, is the US also a failed state?

A – Very possible, that’s why disclosure and transparency are so important. “In the interests of national security, the process must be deconstructed, looked at, and investigated.”
Now US and other corporations have moved into Libya, and are working with Kadafi, this man we claim is a terrorist of the worst kind.
“Clearly the government has failed us.” This is what unites all of us, anti war, conspiracy believers and theorists.

Q – In your first book you seemed to believe that our government had some hand in 9-11, intentional or otherwise, and now today you seem to be backpedaling.

A- My theory has not changed, what has changed are my tactics. We can debate theory here all day and not get very far, or we can use Facts! It’s much more important to focus on what we Know as opposed to what we think. I’m not giving you answers here, those are for you to deduct yourself. What we are doing here is calling for an investigation based on what we do know.

Last statement by one of the organizers – Every footnote in the 9-11 commission report refers to a document they will not let us see. The ACLU has file freedom of info requests and EVERY SINGLE ONE HAS BEEN DENIED. This is a fight for Democracy.

Blind Spot: The Secret History of American Counterterrorism
Timothy Naftali

Following World War II, the United States had developed a highly-efficient system of counterterrorism which was not regularly monitored and updated and eventually became outdated and inefficient. This is the topic of Timothy Naftali's new book, "Blind Spot: The Secret History of American Counterterrorism." It wasn't until the radical groups of the late 1960s and 70s began taking American hostages that the United States was once again forced to confront terrorism. The author traces the history of American counterterrorism through America's global battle with terrorism post-9/11.

Timothy Naftali is the co-author of "One Hell of a Gamble" and "U.S. Intelligence and the Nazis." Mr. Naftali worked as a contractor for the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States. He is an associate professor at the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia.

Countdown to Crisis: The Coming Nuclear Showdown with Iran
Kenneth Timmerman

He argues that Iran should be banned from the international community for their poor human rights records just as South Africa was before remedying their record. This panel was hosted by the Wednesday Morning Club.

Kenneth Timmerman, senior writer for Insight on the News, has been a reporter for over twenty years. His articles have appeared in Time, Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal, Reader's Digest, and The American Spectator.
