"It's Hillbilly Heaven vs. Park Service" - one weird story
http://www.washingtonpost.com

<snip>
Psalms sat on Papa Pilgrim's right knee and Lamb perched on his left. Thirteen more of his children -- all of them with names from the Bible, several of them packing pistols -- crowded around. So did his exhausted-looking wife, Country Rose.
</snip>

I think its most telling that his 28-year-old daughter still lives with the family....there's some abuse going on here...

1. I'm from them thar hills hills of Kentucky
I have a 42 year old cousin that still lives at home. The only time she left home was to go to college. after college went to work at the local hospital and still lives at home. alot of Country folk are like that.

For you to make that assumption, only shows ignorance.

3. Read the story
I'm from the hills of PA, on the WV border and I have more than a few cousins that still live at home...not to mention the fact, that I also did so at various times in my adult life. THESE people are way too wierd for so simple an explanation and I also had a feeling of some sort of abuse.

8. So are you telling me inbreeding only happens in
Tiny towns in Kentucky and tennessee? that to me sounds more than just ignorance, but reaps of bigotry.

13. read the story - these folks might just as well be jewish, buddhists, etc.
etc....

The title of the story is unfortunate.

I think the storyline is more similar to that of a cult - which could be ANY religion, belief, wackiness.

Read the story.

5. forgive me - I was too hasty...
...in making that blanket statement...

It stems from a personal experience in which my former step-father fathered some children with his adopted daughter (in a different family).

The story reminded me of him.

7. I am sorry about your pain with this
but I do get upset when pepole generalize about sterotyping hillbillies. There is another post in this thread to prove my point.

9. Ease up
My feelings, not an assumption, come from professional experience, not from stereotyping anyone. My family are coal miners and hillbillies, too.

15. And just how should I do that?
I fail to see where I insulted or otherwise stereotyped anyone. This is an extremely strange family, living in a situation that often produces physical and/or sexual abuse. That is a PROFESSIONAL opinion, not a statement on whether the man is a hillbilly.

2. OIne of my brothers lived at home
until age 28. Again, just because an adult child lives at home tells you nothing beyond that simple fact.

Some young adults don't make enough money to live separately. Some prefer the comforts of a mom who does the laundry and fixes meals. Some are emotionally or psychologically not ready or capable of independence.

Don't be too hasty in your judgements.

16. Know lots of people
like this back in the hills - just most of them do not own nearly that much property and a replica of that stove in the picture now costs about $5,000
