First Is Backing Stem Cells Because of Big Pharma Want A Piece
Edited on Fri Jul-29-05 02:08 PM by Yavin4
of the action. If stem cell research is done overseas, then the fruits of such research will be hard, if not impossible, for big Pharma to control.

Republicans never back something out of good conscience. There's always a hidden money agenda.

1. Of course
This is what we should do. Show how they are for money and not the people. Early this year Al Franken did an interview with Jimmy Carter and he asked Carter how can the democrats show "moral values" and all that and he said to show how the republican party is for corporations and not the people (anymore anyways). This is a good opportunity to do that I think. Everybody it seems, but Frist, is for this bill. Majority of the public is ready for it as well.

3. makes sense
I'd rather top-notch research be done in the US than overseas.

Supporting good things for bad reasons is better than supporting bad things for no reason.

5. I'm sorry, I forgot my reading glasses, having trouble following.
You're saying that Frist is backing stem cell research because then big pharma can make a bunch more money because they'll be able to do it.

1. Stem cell research should be allowed regardless.

2. Big pharma is international corporations. They could do it overseas if they wanted to.

3. Just because it's big pharma doesn't mean that medical research is evil.

7. they could do this overseas but it`s cheaper in the states----
the feds dole out research money to different public institutions and big pharma reaps the reward of the research. don`t you think that`s a sweet deal on our dime?

Madrchsod, the whole reason corporations are going overseas, big pharma included, is because it's cheaper doing business overseas.

I think anything that comes out of stem cell reseach will be a sweet deal to the taxpayer.

11. I think its the hypocricy more than who's behind it.
Frist and the "Culture of Lifers" are a big, huge bunch of hypocrites.

6. I think it has as much (or more) to do with an easy opportunity to pander
to moderates. There's no way the bill has the votes to override a veto, so it's a free pander moment for Frist in prep for '08.

And, there's really no downside. Regardless of how whiny conservatives are being regarding his stance on this issue, they'll still vote Republican.

10. Doubt they can override the veto,
But there were a lot of Republican crossover votes. When you have a family member who could benefit from this research, it seems the Party line goes out the door. It's not just Spector who has a personal interest in this.
