Wow...someone up there sure has it in for the boy scouts...
Boy Scout Leader Dead After Lightning Strike

July 29 (AP) — After seven days of scrambling up and down canyons in the Sierra Nevada, not far from the highest peak in the lower 48 states, a group of Boy Scouts was held up by a common summer nuisance in the mountains -- a lightning storm.

In a wide, grassy meadow near Mt. Whitney, the five adults and seven teenagers set up two tarps about 50 feet apart, keeping away from granite outcroppings to stay as safe as they could from the bolts lighting up the sky.

But they were at 10,500 feet, and this time, their scouting knowledge of the outdoors wasn't enough to prevent tragedy. A bolt of lightning hit one of the tarps, killing the troop leader instantly, and injuring seven others, including a teenager who was declared brain-dead on Friday, according to the boy's grandfather.

1. Wow. That is unbelievably sad.
I'm not a Boy Scout fan (I'm gay and had some very BAD experiences in Scouts when I was a kid) but this is just too tragic for words.

2. They were being punished for not joining the Jamoree reindeer games
Edited on Fri Jul-29-05 08:20 PM by KzooDem
I mean, really...what were they doing in the Sierra Nevada mountains when they should have been in VA at the Jamboree, anyway??

In all seriousness, how terrible. They go out hiking/camping to bond with nature and this happens. Lest we forget, mother nature still has the upper hand.

4. We had a local eagle scout go bad.
He left his sheltered home to go to a very religious college, came home and killed his family and dog and torched the place. It wasn't schizophrenia, either. He got involved with some pushers or something. Serving a life sentence now.

8. god may not be gay, but he certainly believes in marriage equality
1) The last time The Red Sox won the World Series was in 1918. That was also the year Massachusetts passed a law making it illegal for inter-racial couples from other states to get married here.

2) The next time The Red Sox won the World Series was in 2004, after Gay Marriage became legal in Massachusetts.

Any questions?

7. Awaiting Pat Robertson's Analysis
Edited on Fri Jul-29-05 09:07 PM by Bark Bark Bark
Remember, you can't spell "analysis" without "anal."

...Okay, maybe a little more flippant than the tragic circumstance call for. Still, you have to wonder.

Be on the lookout; the parents of the scout left brain-dead following the lightning strike have arranged to donate his organs. This is bound to offend the FauXians.

10. OK, doing the math here...
12 people. One dead, one critical, 2 ran to get help, a total of seven injured, and they did CPR for an hour on one or two of them.
And these weren't strangers, they knew these folks. :(
