They are two guys from meager beginnings who served their country long after it was required of them (NATO commander and someone who volunteered to go back to the military he had long left, to fight a war that he disagreed with, but wanted to protect his fellow soldiers). Before we start building bridges and statues in his honor like Alaska's Don Young, let's keep things in perspective. There's a BIG difference between a telegenic, clear-speaking, idealistic candidate with a clean record and an elected official who realizes in a big fucking hurry how Capitol Hill politics actually works, with all the partisan bullshit, double-dealing, compromises, back-stabbing, stealth legislation, et. al.

If he pulls this off, it'll be the biggest upset, I think, since Hillary Clinton got elected. But following up on that will be a tremendous challenge for Mr. Hackett, so let's just support him within reason and wait and see what he does in the House when he beats Schmidt.

I really do like Hackett. He says what he feels and doesn't apologize. I read about him talking about Bush being a chickenhawk and he didn't apologize for it at all! Perhaps you could have said that my view of history was short-sighted, that I began too late in JFK's career and should have looked to his earlier campaign, that this more expansive view of JFK's history would reveal closer parallels than simply looking at his presidential run/victory.

You could have said all of this, but you didn't. Instead, you said I "distorted" history. Now you look inaccurate--the very thing you should have been accusing me of.

I have donated to Hackett just as I have donated to some other candidates in close races--because it is strategically necessary to weaken the GOP by any means necessary.

But, let's see what kind of Democrat and democrat he is. That's another issue for a later day.
