President Carter: Guantanamo detentions a "DISGRACE"

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050730/ap_on_re_eu/britain_carter_1&printer=1

Former President Jimmy Carter on Saturday said the detention of terror suspects at the Guantanamo Bay Naval base was an embarrassment and had given extremists an excuse to attack the United States.

Speaking at the Baptist World Alliance's centenary conference in Birmingham, central England, Carter also criticized the U.S.-led war in Iraq and said it was "unnecessary and unjust."

"I think what's going on in Guantanamo Bay and other places is a disgrace to the U.S.A.," he told a news conference. "I wouldn't say it's the cause of terrorism, but it has given impetus and excuses to potential terrorists to lash out at our country and justify their despicable acts."...

Critics of U.S. President George W. Bush's administration have long accused the U.S. government of unjustly detaining terror suspects at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base on the southeastern tip of Cuba. Hundreds of men detained in the war on terror have been held indefinitely at the prison, without charge or access to lawyers.

"What has happened at Guantanamo Bay ... does not represent the will of the American people," Carter said. "I'm embarrassed about it, I think it's wrong. I think it does give terrorists an unwarranted excuse to use the despicable means to hurt innocent people."

1. "an embarrassment and had given extremists an excuse to attack the USA"
One begins to wonder if Bush truly truly meant "bring 'em on".

If all of this is just his version of the Jerry Springer show.

4. I can just hear it now...
They'll be calling him a "failed president." Assholes don't think it's a BAD thing to be hated by a huge portion of the world. AND, Carter never lied, a sin against one of the commandments, I believe.

8. Carter is a saint....
I'm not a real religious person, but Jimmy Carter to me is a saint, or at least he comes very close.O8) Bush is the complete opposite of what Carter is.

6. Have long thought pre-emptive war were "unnecessary and unjust"
and imm****, ill****, and inh*****, but what does a solitary soul know especially when about one-half of Americans think anything a Repug Administration does is fine and dandy, even hunky-dorey.

9. The last president worthy of the adjective "Honorable".
I reluctantly voted for him, thought him too moderate, but he was the last president that I felt was doing his best for the American people and the world and not just political gaming.

Seems a long time ago since we had an honorable person for president.

11. Funny, I just had this same conversation today.
About Jimmy Carter and how noble he really is, his house building to the Noble Prize, he is spot on a good man. I am glad to see at least one past President come out against these actions, nice to see finally.

12. I have always thought
Carter was and is great. There was a line that said "He used the Presidency as a stepping stone to a much higher office." The man is decent in the finest sense of the word. I even got to vote for him twice.

13. Woah Nelly! What have I not been paying attention to?
From the article:
Carter, who won the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for his years of peace efforts, has been an outspoken critic of the Iraq war.

Damn if *I* missed it, the rest of the US has too. Please tell me that I'm terribly mis-informed.
