Hehe. I know the relationship is funny sounding.

Anyways, he and I were riding down together for 4 and half hours. Talking about everything including, of course, politics. One of the things he said is that Muslims are the majority in France. Of course I already know that's false and I looked it up, of course he is wrong by a long shot since 80% of France is Roman Catholic.

Anyways, we started talking about social security. He said that democrats are obstructionist, and they don't have any ideas. I said well put them in there and they'd solve it, just like they do in every social security possible disaster. I told him also, that considering how petty and ignorant republicans are, any ideas from the Democrats would be trashed anyways. That's what republicans do, they can't stand plans that work. I also said that Bush's plans of investment would break social security, and he said......

BUSH'S SOCIAL SECURITY PLAN ISN'T MEANT TO SOLVE SOCIAL SECURITY BEING INSOLVENT, HE IS ONLY DOING THAT DELAY IT, NOT FIX IT.

I was like, what? He could be right about that. But I swear Bush said that his "young people can invest" bullcrap was given as the end all for social security woes. I am pretty sure that he came out and said "this will do it" and people saw right through that and panned it.

I appreciate your help!

2. I think you're right.

But Bush's way of "solving" social security is to dismantle it all together. Which would technically take away all the problems. Our problem with it is that it would take away all the benefits as well.

6. Bush deliberately tried to confuse America on this
He brought up the insolvency issue and then hammered his ridiculous privatization scheme AS IF IT WAS the solution to the insolvency issue, which of course it wasn't. He never explicitly spelled out the link between the two, but the tie was a not-so-implicit one, he was basically hoping that by scaring people with looming insolvency, he could gain their support to do SOMETHING; i.e; privatize social security.

This time, surprisingly, Americans saw through it, however. Democrats for once found their voice and exposed the fact that SOLVENCY and PRIVATIZATION were two entirely mutually exclusive issues and that Bush's calls for privatization were a rightwing smokescreen that would do nothing to help the longterm fiscal viability of social security.

Personally, I think this issue did far more damage to Bush's credibility than even Iraq. Americans finally saw that here was a guy willing to try to dupe them on an issue of overwhelming importance to their financial security. It was the beginning of the end of his presidency.

7. As I grow weary of saying....
Social Security is not broken, it is running a surplus and will continue to do so until 2018. After 2018 the treasury notes that constitute the social security trust fund will fully fund the system, by the most pessimistic projections, until sometime around 2040.

If the concern is that the burden on the federal budget reflected by the end of the fica revenue presents a problem after 2018, that can easily be solved by undoing the irresponsible Bush tax cuts, cuts which went disproportionately to the very wealthy. For example, undoing the repeal of the estate tax, all by itself, would go a long way toward easing the burden.

The Democratic Party is not proposing changes to reduce benefits or increase FICA taxes because neither is appropriate or required.
