Poll question: How many of you support legalized pot but are also non-stoners?
Edited on Sun Jul-31-05 03:35 PM by JanMichael
Just asking because the illegality of that plant stumps me. Sure I've smoked before but never regularly and usually infrequently so I count myself as a non-stoner supporter of the legalisation of marijuana.

Frankly if you want to stop stupid behavior start with vodka and tequila, whew, dumbest things I've EVER done or said was after drinking those to demon liquids.

1. How about a "Me! Smoke it very rarely." ???
I don't think 2-4 times a year makes one a 'stoner'.

Seriously, does noone see a problem with being able to edit polls after voting has started?

I guess it isn't such a big deal since the editing window expires pretty quickly, but...

8. legal
remember about a week or so ago, they found a tunnel from BC in Canada which led to a house in Washington state? I saw an interview about that with someone speaking for the Canadian police and he said that people would always find a way to smuggle that stuff across the border so long as there is a demand for it in the US.

The only logical way to reduce the demand is to make it legal. Then people wouldn't have to acquire it illegally! I doubt that many pot smokers want to break the law but they also know that's the only way to get it.

48. Not even a handful for me - twice, as a matter of fact - but I agree with
you.

Why is it illegal? Did you ever hear of a bunch of stoners getting into a bar brawl? And how addictive is it compared to cigarettes, alcohol or gambling?

I say legalize it, tax it and get some money for our schools!

39. Pot is a gateway drug
Edited on Sun Jul-31-05 05:58 PM by XemaSab
because all "illegal" drugs are put into the same "Just say no" category, so pot, crack, meth, acid, ludes, exstacy, opium, PCP, mescaline, hashish, cocaine, bennies, shrooms, etc are all treated as totally equivalent, equal, toxic "smoke a joint and you die a slow painful death" substances.

A kid grows up hearing this, and they think that smoking a joint and shooting heroin are just about the same thing.

One day, the kid's at a party and someone hands him a joint. He takes a hit and realizes that pot's not evil. He then thinks that all that "war on drugs" shit is complete BS, because if they lied about pot, well then they've lied about everything else too. So the next time he's at a party and they're all dropping acid or taking X or snorting coke, he's all about it, and if someone hands him a crack pipe, hey, why not?

On edit: it's a gateway drug because people smoke pot and they realize that the government lies about drugs, so it's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Last time I tried it (in 1977) I puked everything but my nuts and toenails. The very SMELL of the stuff gets my gorge rising ever since.

The only reason it was outlawed in the FIRST place was because Seagrams was losing money on their cheap whiskey sales during the last Depression. Amazing what you can do when you own pet Congresscriiters, isn't it?

never have done any illegal drugs. Still don't know how I lived through the 60s and didn't, but it is so. But I've never understood why hemp in its many forms should be illegal. Heck, you can't even grow the kind that won't get you high, which is ridiculous.

Someone else here may know more about it, but hemp can be used for fuel, clothing, rope and numerous other products. There is probably a $$$$ reason why you can't grow hemp that doesn't produce THC. That is to say, corporations don't want it on the market.

20. You've got it
marijuana was made illegal in the mid thirties, just when DuPont came up with nylon, which was a competitor with hemp. Hemp clothes are wonderful-wear like iron, clean up easily, and get softer with age. And the biomass could be used to help with alternative fuels.

13. Legalize it. Harsher penalties for "under the influence" crimes.
I smoked more than my share when young and dumb. Drank way too much, and dabbled in other downers, hash, and acid. I shudder to think how many times I drove under the influence of any of them. Fortunately, the only one injured was me.

I gave the whole works up long ago when I finally realized that:

a) I was killing myself. (The booze, not the pot).
b) I was hurting other people (through neglect)
c) Wandering around in a stupor wasn't living.

I'm NOT preaching to anybody. You want to get stoned, bombed, wiped out, that's your business. But, be responsible with it.

15. For complete decriminalization
Haven't smoked in years, wouldn't know where to start to find it. But, the people I knew with major addiction problems in the 60's didn't start out with pot, they began with alcohol. In my many years I've never personally seen a family or a life torn apart by marijuana, but can't begin to count those due to alcohol and serious drugs.

17. I believe in decriminalization, but not deregulation
And by regulation, I mean that any marijuana sold should be of a certain quality, be safe for consumers and not have additives of other substances. In order to fund regulation of trade and quality, the government should have the right to tax legal marijuana sales, and prosecute anyone who attempts to sell it illegally. Individual citizens should have the right to grow a small amount of marijuana for personal use, with sale strictly prohibited.

Individuals who are arrested for DUI, whether alcohol or marijuana, should receive a mandatory jail sentence and lose their driver's licenses for at least a year. Individuals who injure or kill another during DUI should be charged with either felony assault or manslaughter, and should have all driving privileges revoked for the rest of their natural lives. You can smoke or drink til you're crosseyed, but don't hurt anyone else.

I dont' smoke marijuana, but I would support legalization as long as there are reforms on how we deal with the consumption of America's favorite drug, alcohol. It is ridiculous that a teenager can't have a glass of wine in a restaurant. We have created a culture of alcohol abuse by our half-assed regulations.

22. I was a hard core....
...legalizer in college. Along with my dorm buddies founded the longest-lived legalization college group in the country, which is still active today.

Though I did try, earnestly, for a while I just couldn't work smoking marijuana into my busy schedule. Half of the group's strongest supporters (exec board officers, etc.) were not smokers, contrary to public opinion.

These days it just makes me paranoid, unless I'm completely drunk, and since I rarely ever get completely drunk, it's just not worth keeping any around.

A few years after leaving college we found out that our area of the dorm, which we had decorated with psychedelic lights, was utterly notorious. We had a campus-wide reputation as the hardest core, scariest, druggies on campus. Could have fooled me, I mean, we were by no means a dry area as far as drugs and alcohol were concerned, but mostly those days we boozed it up more than anything else, and hardly to the extent that the sports fans down on the other corner of campus did.

We just liked our lightshow and our trippy music. I guess that was too much for the squares to stomach. Man, I wish I had known we were infamous in college. I could have used that "bad boy" image so effectively.

Used to smoke it a lot when I was younger...now, not very often. Just not that into it anymore.

(And no, I never made some dramatic "I'm quitting" sort of grandstanding - never had to. I just kind of tapered off as I lost interest. I still indulge every once in a while when it's offered or when I really feel like it.)

I support decriminalization 100%. Even when I was a sort of heavy smoker, it never did me half the harm that alcohol or nicotine (now there's a real addiction I can't kick) did, and all my regular-smoker friends are great people--active, creative, never harm anyone.

As usual, I feel the need to give my usual PSA--smoking (anything)=bad for lungs. And any substance can be abused, so please toke responsibly. But withholding an excellent, cheap(ish) analgesic from sick people or people with chronic pain is CRUEL. Persecuting Those Damn Kids for using it isn't right, either. We as a society should move beyond that.

41. Just pot? I'd legalize (not just decriminalize) all drugs.
Imprisoning people is not the answer to either escapism or chemical masturbation. The former is best dealt with by dealing with social injustice, and the latter is discouraged as much as it can be by education. The "war on drugs" serves three purposes:

1. prison profiteering
2. a pretext for corrupt governmental officials/agencies to corner the market on drugs by force
3. slush funds for illegal activities by government officials/agencies (engaged in for still further profits, e.g. installing puppet governments in Latin America)

None of these things is anything I care to aid or abet.

I attempted to smoke marijuana a couple times in my very early twenties..I say "attempted" because I didn't feel any effect whatsoever! However, I absolutely DESPISE the drug policy in this country! The drug warriors show their true colors by wanting to throw medical marijuana patients in jail for taking their medicine.

50. Legalize it
I don't alter my conscienness with any outside substance. For me there is no bigger waste of my time. But who am I to tell others what to enjoy? I used to get stoned and I understand it's appeal. It's relatively harmless, when used responsibly. The fact that it's still illegal is beyond ridiculous. It doesn't make sense. The fact that child molesters can get out of jail faster than certain marijuana growers is even more disgusting. The illegality of marijuana makes for a very dangerous black market drug cartel, when you could invest in some hydroponics and grow your own. But I guess the prison industry needs human fodder to feed it.

57. I've never touched pot, but I support those that want to legalize it.
It lacks logic and common sense that pot is illegal. That's the bottom line. If need be, because I guess it can affect you like booze, inhibiting your abilities, it should have the same legal standing as booze. Age requirements, DUI charges, etc.

58. Did up until about 20 years ago
Would again if I didn't risk going to jail. Legalize it. BTW, the wording of your questions sucks. Didn't see it before it was changed, but the edit obviously didn't help.

67. Eh? So what.
I didn't exactly want to make the perfect poll, it's a flippin' website for gawd's sake.

Lighten up, no, light one up:-)

59. Oh, I miss it!
I would still smoke if I could, but it sets my heart to racing, and doing the hiphop heartbeat thing. Tachycardia, you all!
So, no, no, no. I don't smoke it no more.
But oh, if I could, would I. And would probably end up weighing 400 pounds from the munchies.
It's the least harmful - well, a little bronchitis maybe, and a distinct lethargy, but hey, who GVSAS? Did you see that rainbow, man?

62. Never have...
and I don't plan on it. I'm young, so I'll never say never, but it's not really my thing.

My parents did, though, and say so openly.

64. Another vote for legalization from a former occasional
pot smoker.

Haven't had any in years, don't really miss it, but would very much like to see it legalized.
