Hollywood against Bush--a source for their quotes
Edited on Sun Jul-31-05 10:01 PM by Stargleamer
I've found a source for Hollywood actors' quotes on Bush, from a r.w. website: <http://www.boycottliberalism.com/biographies> There are a collection of great quotes here, some that will really lift your spirits. Among my favorites:

"Bush is an idiot and he's President, so anything's possible." -- John McEnroe

Trent Reznor's classic, "Apparently the image of our president is offensive to MTV as it is to me"

"I am a traitor to my class. I think tax cuts to wealthy thugs like me are borderline criminal." -- Paul Newman

"I am more patriotic than this president we have, who I consider a traitor of human and American principles. --Sean Penn

"Surely, it is more likely that an attack on Iraq would only strengthen Al Qaeda by feeding Anti-American sentiment. Putting out the fire with gasoline, so to speak. It is certainly not to liberate the people of Iraq who suffer under Hussein's rule, unless we call killing hundreds of thousands of Iraqis liberation." -- Dave Matthews

"Latins for Republicans — it's like roaches for Raid." John Leguizamo

In addition to being a source of great quotes, this site informed me that a lot of Hollywood celebrities that I thought were apolitical, like Clare Danes and Janet Jackson, are in fact anti-Bush too.

They quote Bono as someone they would like. Clearly, they need someone to explain to them, BONO IS NO FRIEND OF THE FASCISTS!

3. Some of those heroes of the fascists just AREN'T
A whole bunch of those names are of people on whom they either have outdated information (Loretta Lynn), are progressives and/or Democrats who simply have erred on a few issues (Bruce Willis, and even Toby Keith), have changed their minds (Jessica Simpson), or who may simply agree with Bush on a stray issue here or there (Kenny Chesney). Several are pro-war but otherwise do not support much of Bush's agenda (Tom Selleck, Bo Derek); some claim to be conservative because they're pandering to their audience (Toby Keith, Larry the Cable Guy); a few are personal friends of Bush who are otherwise moderate or progressive (Kelsey Grammar).

Some are just nuts (Ted Nugent, James Woods). Some of the nuts have also been tarred with a too-wide brush (Mel Gibson, Robert "Kid Rock" Ritchie). A few are kids (Kerri Strug). Some think they have to support Bush because they are Southern Christians, but their support is a mile wide and an inch deep (Amy Grant, Michael Smith). Some are Libertarians and suffer (often unfairly) from guilt-by-association (Bruce Boxleitner, Clint Eastwood).

I'd estimate that less than 30% of that list comprises the actual fascists (IMHO: Richard Petty, Fred Gandy, Fred Thompson, Pat Sajak, JC Watts, Gloria Estefan).

* * * * *

Why I am going to these lengths to "defend" these entertainers? Well, it's simple, really. This is the same tactic that the hard-ass Right uses to claim a plurality or majority of Americans as their partisans, when the reality is a lot different.

A lot of people who voted for Bush did so on the basis of incomplete informationl; emotional appeals; disdain for a "60s" or "hippie" culture that never really existed; belief that we really are at war with an impacable foe; erroneous beliefs about John Kerry, Al Gore, and that George Bush really isn't a rich man's son, but a hardscrabble cowboy; the increasingly strained connection between the South, Christianity, and Conservatism; or the increasingly laughable connection between masculinity and Conservatism.

So, for instance, Tom Selleck's masculine airs (a product of his acting work) and his support for firearms rights earns him the title of Bush Fascist, but his long-term strong support for Gay Rights and other "libbrul agendas" is scarcely mentioned. Kelsey Grammar was courted by George Bush after 9/11, having lost two of his closest friends -- Frasier producers David and Lynn Angel -- in that disaster.

And Bono? That's a laugh. Bono's a diplomat by disposition, and his celebrity and activism give him access to "high places". He'd rather get money and commitment for social change than venting his anger.

I may be wrong about a few of them, but I doubt it's that many. Entertainers tend not to be haters. Even long-time Republican die-hards, like Wayne Newton, have far more generous and forgiving spirits than the Neo-Cons and the Bat-Guano-Crazy Right.

It's time we saw through the fog of lies that allows the Devil to claim so many of our friends and neighbors as his own. We can start with getting a better idea of how the Right divvies up the world and its people, and gives themselves the lion's share. It's easier to do with entertainers, since they are so widely quoted, but their harvest is far wider, and represents a challenge -- and an opportunity for us to reclaim Americans as fair-minded, idealistic, democratic and more interested in justice than in vengeance.

Unfortunately, amy grant is part of the kool-aid brigade. I was disappointed, too.

I should have taken Eastwood's name off the list. I do recall him distancing himself from the christofascist zombie brigade.

5. Charles Barkley's not a Republican
Edited on Mon Aug-01-05 02:42 AM by sonicx
It's a common misconception. He's very critical of Bush and supported Edwards in the dem primaries.

Except for Cuban issues, Gloria Estefan seems like a liberal. Many people on that list are liberel/moderate but for some reason vote Republican. Lara Flynn Boyle's reason for voting for Bush is very stupid.

6. Exactly, Barkley was joking with his grandmother when he said he was repub
she was teasing him about being rich and turning into a repub. Barkley hates Bush too.

Willis however is a convert, he LOVED Reagan! His loved carried over until sometime last year when he was doing all of those USO tours. I guess being around the soldiers made him dislike Shrub. Plus his ex Demi FUCKING hates Bush. Apparently when Michael Moore did the Hollywood screening of F9/11 Demi screamed at Bush throughout the entire movie. I'm guessing that she had some part in Bush falling out of Willis' good graces.

Otherwise though the rest are all repukes.

I was just glad that the rumor that Dolly Parton was a repuke has been debunked. Dolly loves the environment and gay folks, she remains apolitical, and is an independant voter. But thank god their is no history whatsoever of Dolly liking Bush in the least.

9. The USO is actually fairly liberal-dominated
The hard-working ceremonial head of the USO, Wayne Newton, as I said, is a long-time Republican, but he's not a hater, and has been very supportive of the liberal entertainers who support the USO, like Robin Williams, Al Franken, Janeane Garofalo, etc.

And even the well-hated Toby Keith got along with them on tour. I suppose actually being near where the blood gets spilled sobers some people up.

Willis doesn't seem very politically astute -- or, possibly, he is of two minds about a number of issues. A lot of people are in that situation, and we shouldn't forget about them, either. Not everybody can be a political wonk.
