Kids who get along with their parents are "conservative"
Edited on Sun Jul-31-05 10:33 PM by Rose Siding
This is on Yahoo's "most popular" list, which leads me to believe that the political connotation of the term is being applied- Maybe not by all, but its usage for that purpose is common.

US 13-year-olds are fairly conservative: Time poll

snip>
In a story on the lives and thinking of American 13-year-olds, Time magazine reports that sixty percent of the 500 surveyed by the magazine are against sex before marriage, and 63 percent believe they are too young to date at their age.
....
If anything is surprising in Time's feature, it is how normal and conservative -- in a day of provocative music videos, widespread Internet access, and lurid cable television shows -- today's 13 year olds are.

Nine out of ten of those polled on line by the magazine said their relationship with their parents is good or excellent, and only seven percent said their parents were too strict.

And 63 percent consider their religious faith at least somewhat important in their lives.

The cover story is subscription, but here are some of the poll results

Mrs. IconCat was not promiscuous, liked/likes school, loves her family, went to church until she decided (w/parents' consent) to quit religion and surprise: she's more liberal than I am!

On edit: she has also been hardcore goth the entire time, too.

2. Anyone who believes
that 13 year olds actually tell the truth on polls is just not thinking clearly.

3. Right.
I can't help but think of my older daughter. She fits the general description. One Sunday morning in the rural church she attends, during the sermon she raised her hand. When the pastor called on her, she stood up and said, approximately, "Now, I'm thinking, if we really believe what Jesus said, we should throw money away, and just share. Things should be free."

After the mass, a few of the older members came up and told me that I have an interesting child. But none of them called her "conservative."

7. I wonder about the respondents...
Edited on Sun Jul-31-05 10:31 PM by Fridays Child
Equally divided between boys and girls?
Parents' income levels?
Interaction with grandparents?
Area of country?
Edit: Parents' political affiliations?

I also wonder how these stats might change if the respondents were, say, fifteen or sixteen years old.

8. 501 supposed teenagers taking an online survey
won't convince me of anything. I was curious about this company so in just a couple of minutes I just registered to do surveys with them and took several years off of my real age.

This TIME poll of U.S. 13-year-olds was conducted via the Internet June 10-15 using a nationwide Harris Interactive Online sample. SRBI Public Affairs designed the survey. The margin of error for the entire sample (501 interviews) is approximately +/- 5 percentage points. The margin of error is greater for subgroups

12. We should be surprised
that the kids who go along with what their parents want willing (or at least pretend to) get along with them?
