The UN Doesn't Have to Accept Bolton's Credentials
It is likely that one or more General Assembly member states will challenge Bolton. In that case, under Articles 27-29, he will be seated provisionally until the nine members of the Credentials Committee can vote on the question. See, http://www.un.org/ga/59/credent/functions.html ; http://daccessdds.un.org/doc/UNDOC/GEN/NS0/005/44/IMG/NS000544.pdf?OpenElement

The members of the Credentials Committee appointed at the 59th session are:

Benin
Bhutan
China
Ghana
Liechtenstein
Russian Federation
Trinidad and Tobago
United States
Uruguay

http://www.un.org/ga/59/credent/composition.html

This could force what Bush likes to call an "up or down" vote on the issue, and a possibly Bolton's first direct conflict with Russia and China at the UN. It is unclear how the smaller states on the committee might vote.

1. Kofi Annan has just said
he's "looking forward to working with John Bolton", according to CNN. Dependably spineless as always.

2. Contacting the UN - our voices
You can Email to inquiries@un.org

or go to http://www.un.org/comments.html

Let's let the UN know that Bolton is NOT the choice of the people of the United States to represent them at the UN!

4. Also send your message to the members of the Cred Comm.
Challenges happen frequently.

Successful challenges are extraordinary. But, are these not the most extraordinary times?

Bolton's nomination signals the Bush Administration's intention to use the UN to legitimize an attack against Iran - something most of the world surely wants to avoid. If this is a tactic to stall or delay that move to war, so be it. They had better take advantage of this opportunity.

5. Here's what I am wishing on a star for:
When Bolton goes before the UN to present his credentials and say his speech, I hope every single member stands and turns their back to him. And then I hope everybody in the UN from the top down SHUNS him Amish-style until his recess appointment is up.

Don't think there is much chance of getting my wish, but a girl can dream...........

6. Of course they will
the UN isn't going to put themselves in the position of refusing to accept bush as the president of the US, which is what they would be doing. They're diplomats.
