WASHINGTON, Aug 1 (KUNA) -- US President George Bush on Monday described King Fahad Bin Abdel Aziz, who died earlier today after 23 years as the Saudi Monarch, as "a man of wisdom" and a leader who commanded respect throughout the entire world. Bush, in a statement released by the White House, said the late Saudi Monarch was a friend and strong ally of the United States for decades. "As King, he had warm friendships with American Presidents. I send my condolences and those of the American people to King Abdallah, to the late King Fahd's family, and to the Saudi people on the passing of this historic figure," he said.
President Bush spoke earlier today with King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz, the new Saudi King, to offer condolences and to congratulate him on assuming the Saudi throne and the position of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. "We wish Saudi Arabia peace and prosperity under his leadership. And the United States looks forward to continuing the close partnership between our two countries," Bush said.
