This group serves as a reminder that sitting back and remaining quiet never solved anything. Three cheers to my hometown activists:
DOZENS MARCH IN FRONT OF PORTAGE (MI)HOME OVER RULE TO PREVENT LOITERING
Almost 60 people from the Kalamazoo Homeless Action Network staged a protest Sunday at the Portage home of a McDonald's official to protest an anti-loitering rule at the chain's downtown Kalamazoo restaurant.
The protesters arrived by school bus Sunday afternoon at Lori Court, a quiet dead-end street off Vanderbilt Avenue near the Gourdneck State Game Area. Brandishing placards, blowing whistles and horns and shouting chants, they gathered in the driveway of the home of Tom Hull, a McDonald's operations manager.
Hull has served as spokesman for the anti-loitering policy, which sets a 30-minute limit for patrons at the downtown restaurant, located on Kalamazoo Avenue near two homeless shelters.
-snip-
"The way the 30 minutes is enforced is discriminatory," Joe Schmitt said as he walked a picket line Sunday in front of Hull's house. "If you're black or ragged-looking, you're asked to leave, but other people are allowed to stay. It's not fair."
