1. OK...
Even though I'm a Clark supporter, this is uncalled for. Let's stop playing the stupid game of "The other candidate is the evil!"

I agree with Dean, although slightly generalized: None of the Democratic candidates deserve to be compared with Gingrich, or any other Republican.

14. A sure way to start a fight with my husband is to call him republican
It's downright unfair to compare anyone with Gingrich. He is one of the biggest hypocrites living today.

6. Deans supports slowing Medicare's growth rate
by shifting emphasis from nursing home care to home care, which is cheaper. Of course, if you happen to own a few very profitable nursing homes, you might not like that approach. But if you're the senior in quesion, and whether or not you stay in your house or go to a nursing home is a question of a wheelchair ramp paid for by Medicare, you might. And guess which costs the taxpapers less in the long run?

8. why did he say this then...
"The way to balance the budget is for Congress to cut Social Security, move the retirement age to 70, cut defense, Medicare and veterans pensions, while the states cut almost everything else. It would be tough but we could do it." -- Howard Dean in 1995

It's 2003 and the election is in 2004. Is this campaign about the past or the present?

so the past has nothing to do with the present? So stop bashing Clark and lets rumble. The only people I see slamming Clark as much as Dean supporters are guys named Hannity and Limbaugh.

....I'm ALL FOR IT!

Welfare is means tested.

SSI-disability is means tested.

Food stamps are means tested.

Student grants and loans are means tested.

Small business loans are means tested.

WHY NOT means test Medicare?

He said today that he really believed that was the way to balance the budget back than but that Clinton proved it didn't have to happen that way.

26. Funny you should ask. He was asked that question just this morning.
SCHIEFFER: Here's a quote you said along about that time. "The way to balance the budget is for congress to cut social security, move the retirement age to 70, cut defense, Medicare and veterans pensions." You said at the time "it would be tough, but we could do it." So let's just go through that. Do you want to extend the retirement age for social security to 70?

DEAN: No, I don't. I want to leave the retirement age exactly where it is. That was a time when the budgetary situation was a disaster in this country. Bill Clinton has shown that when the economy gets better and people pay payroll taxes, social security becomes solvent. We had no inkling we would balance the budget under a democratic congress and then a republican congress who had no

15. Could you be a little more specific?
Where and when did he say so, and where is the thread? He might have thought along these lines several years ago, but I don't know of anything he's said recently about it. There's room for improvement in any program.

16. once again...
"I have never favored a Social Security retirement age of 70 nor do I favor one of 68." -- Howard Dean in August of 2003

"I would also entertain taking the retirement age up to 68." -- Howard Dean to NBC in June of 2003

"The way to balance the budget is for Congress to cut Social Security, move the retirement age to 70, cut defense, Medicare and veterans pensions, while the states cut almost everything else. It would be tough but we could do it." -- Howard Dean in 1995

Now, isn't the first quote a lie? I am not saying you can't change your mind on issues. But isn't the first quote a lie? I found it so sweet when Franken boxed in O'Reilly for lying. And what makes it sweet? The lies to cover up the lies. What would Dean say if he was asked the same thing today?

18. He'd say this, as he did on Face The Nation, today.
DEAN: I have changed on some of the issues. I think that's one of the hallmarks of who I am. I'm a doctor. I believe if you have a theory and the fact comes along that changes the theory, then you throw out the theory. The republicans believe that if a fact comes along that changes the theory, they throw out the fact. They deny there is such a thing as global warming. President made the case now that bipartisan committee in congress admits was exaggerated and ignored the facts for going to war in Iraq. This is pretty serious stuff. I have no complaint and no embarrassment about changing my positions at all. If facts come along that show you things need to change, you need to change them.

I don't think there is virtue in stubbornly clean clinging to a theory when the theory is wrong and has led us into trouble. The republicans in this administration have proved that.

24. Your Post is misleading
Dean said, in 95, that one way to help balance the budget was to cut Medicare. That is true usn't? It would have helped. You could also drop the program altogether. Just because it is a way to balance the budget doesn't mean it is the way he ultimately advocated. He and other responsible Dems were searching for ways to balance the budget. That was a possibility back then. Its not needed now. His statements in 95 do not ocmpare to Clarks in 2001 favoring Repugs, especially since Clark didn't become a Dem until two weeks ago. What people said in the past does matter. You have to weigh it with all the other evidence.

Of COURSE that's not really the case. Nor is Kucinich pro-life just because he used not to support abortion rights.

At the risk of being struck by lightning (or a mod), can't we just call this guy a disruptor abd be done with it?
