Here in the San Joaquin Valley several farm workers have died in the fields. The temperatures have been in triple digits for weeks now.
There is concern in the area and meetings are being held to try to come up with workable solutions to keep the farm workers from dying in the heat.
Here is a letter to the editor in the Bakersfield Californian August 1st edition.
"Stay cool in the shade"
"Regarding heat strokes suffered by farm-workers in the fields, do like I did when I was in high school.
We started early and quit early. We used common sense. When we felt funny, we found shade and cooled off and drank a lot of water.
Regarding getting only minimum wage, the solution is to get an education that will allow people to get a better-paying job. Also. $6.75 an hour in Mexico is good money."
That is the conservative answer to every poor person's problem. It's their fault they are poor. How can the decide what time to go to work and when to quit? How can they find shade in an open field? How are they going to go to school and make a living too?
