It looks like the subject in the foreground has on goggles, and possibly a mouth covering of some sort. A little weird, but that's what happens with bad photography.

I think it's just additional camoflague to keep from being shot and killed. He may also be trying to get heat stroke so he can get some time off.

my brother over there told me that some risk the heat to keep the sand off their face to prevent boils. he said the sand mixes with sweat and forms a cement-like paste, and some soldiers would rather the heat than the sand.
