Motorist Comes to Rescue (Hero in the Toronto crash)

Great story about two regular guys who saw the plane go off the runway, then ran over to lend a hand and help passengers climb out of the wreckage.

Amazingly, they both went into the burning plane after everyone seem to have left, to ensure there was no one still inside, an act which almost cost them their lives.

if we want to validate our story that we are a nation of ugly people that is all we will see. i on the other hand, chatting with strangers easily, have found lots of nice kind and funny, enjoyable people to interact with

not mutually exclusive by any means, but in many situations, when action is desperately needed...people stand by and watch...and later complain that no one did anything...

and the actions of these two heroes supports that belief . . . yes, people can also be lazy, stupid, self-involved, and seemingly uncaring, but deep down inside, most have good hearts and will help others when opportunities arise . . . if I didn't believe this, continuing to fight for what's right wouldn't make much sense . . .

A dear friend of mine is a retired flight attendant, and we discussed this last night. Flight attendants, who can so often be treated so rudely as menial waiters and waitresses, are actually lifelines. Listening to the instructions before flight and before landing are paramount. Read the safety cards too.

9. I fly constantly, so I have trouble focusing on the 250th instruction

about how to use your seatbelt.

But I never ignore the instruction to "find the exit closest to you". I count the seat-backs between me and the exit (if I'm not seated there myself!) and keep it in mind throughout the flight. Also scope out where the alternative exits are, in case the one closest is unusable.

Kudos to the crew as well - that was my first thought yesterday when I heard everyone was safe. I hope we hear more about how they did it - quite a feat.

12. Same Here!

I always count the rows to the back of the plane (i like sitting back there, nearer to the bathrooms), and to the wing exits. Whichever is closer is already my decided route.

Once i have that, i tune out the rest of the safety thing. "Oxygen mask, bag doesn't inflate, blah, blah, blah; water landing, seat cushion, blah, blah, blah; no smoking in bathrooms, blah, blah, blah. . ."
