Butte County Man Falsely Named as Sex Offender

A Butte County man wants to find out who's printed and distributed flyers bearing his photo, name and description as a registered sex offender when he's not.

William Edward Shelton, 55, said someone pasted a copy of his driver's license photo onto a printout of the crimes of convicted sex offender William Ray Shelton, 48, taken from California's Megan's Law website. The first Shelton said he's found flyers with the defamatory information posted around Durham, where he owns an antiques business.

The photo of Shelton doesn't look like the other William Shelton. The Durham man said the disinformation is hurting his reputation and his business. "To destroy someone's life for a personal vendetta or for no reason at all is criminal," he said.
