7. I remember writing an report in 1962 or so . . .

I was in the 10th grade I think, and we all had to pick a current events topic to research and report on . . . my topic was Vietnam, and I vividly recall that my report ended with a quote from Gen. Westmoreland about "seeing the light at the end of the tunnel" . . . (at the time, I actually belived him) . . . some things never change . . .

that's the point. the USA really never had anything at stake in vietnem; it couldn't 'lose' the 'war' even if it wanted to, it finally just left and declared victory, no hard feelings! the vietnamese never were the enemy, and when they finally forced the US rulers to look elsewhere for their 'opportunities' no one cared. same with iraq. the US hasn't anything at stake in iraq; if the US left tomorrow within a few years US companies etc would be over there anyway, and relations eventually restored, as if nothing ever happened. Consider the hate between the arabs and israelis, or between the tamils and the buddhist majority in sri lanka; or between the tutsis and the hutus in rwanda, or even between black and white americans! that's hatred, deep and gut wrenching and mindless, but real! the usa pig class USED vietnam, and now iraq (and obviously nicaragua, el salvador, chile, haiti, iran etc earlier) for certain reasons, but there never was any real 'hate' involved....which, in a way, makes americans even worse then the hate driven psychos like the hutus, or kkk, or the tamil tigers etc, who had at least some reasons for being monstrous
