Bush WARNS GOP on stem cells

President Bush said Tuesday he would veto legislation by Republican lawmakers who want to relax his 2001 restrictions on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.

"I made it clear to the ... Congress I took the right position, and we'll veto any bill that doesn't adhere to that stance," Bush said in a White House meeting with eight regional newspapers, including The Bee Washington Bureau. "They have a prerogative to pass bills, and I have a prerogative to set limits on what I think is right."

Bush has made the veto threat before, but this was the first time he addressed Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist's breakaway announcement that he would support a boost in federal funding for stem cell research.

nor will he succeed in setting up a theocracy of his narrow interpretation of religion, no matter how hard he tries.

Frist is obviously putting distance between himself and Silverspoon. The Dems are sure to coalesce to assure a veto proof majority, and unless Frist does a horrible job of assembling moderate Repubs and the liberterian wing, they should be able to override.

20. I suspect we'd see another after midnight vote bribe in the

House, like the one on CAFTA or the drug bill. I suspect, if the Pub leaders feel there would actually be a veto over-ride, the bribes and threats would make sure they stopped it.

I can't imagine that Bush wants the only veto of his presidential career to be vetoing medical research. I wouldn't be surprised if he twists the arms of some Senators to approve a face-saving amendment.

21. I think Bush and Frist had a falling out over Bolton. Remember

when Bush called him to the White House after Frist would not bring Bolton's nomination to the floor because he did not have the votes. Bush called him in and when Frist left the WH he told reporters that the President wanted an up or down vote and Frist said that he would see to it that they had an up or down vote.

Wish I could check the video of that conference at the base of the WH driveway. Anyway, you could tell that something was wrong - Frist was not talking with his usual phat attitude. And then, Bolton was never brought to the floor and Frist changed his views on stem cells. I think they are really really at odds but the media is not reporting it. I mean - this is an open war and just imagine if Clinton had been fueding with his leadership. The media would have been rubbing their paws together like squirrels in the fall.

was a Type 1 diabetic I bet the chimp would change his mind in a hurry. Once you watch your child inject insulin 3 or 4 times a day..not to mention pricking fingers to check blood glucose levels 6 or 7 times a day for years.... that really helps clarify the embryonic stem cell issue.
