MSNBC: "Marines hit hardest in Iraq • Ohio families fed up"

That is the name of the link on MSNBC's Website for this story:

Iraq attacks hit Ohio military families hard
21 Marines from same battalion killed in the past week

Family members of Marine Cpl. Andre L.
Williams of Galloway, Ohio, grieve outside
the Port Columbus Air Cargo Facility in
Columbus on Wednesday.

Updated: 6:59 a.m. ET Aug. 4, 2005
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Rosemary Palmer and her husband were making plans to attend memorial services for six Marine reservists killed earlier this week — five of them from the same battalion as her son, Lance Cpl. Edward Schroeder — when two uniformed servicemen came down her street.

It was her family’s turn.

“We knew. They didn’t even get a chance to knock,” Palmer said.

For relatives of those in the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines, there has been a sudden spike in such grim visits from uniformed servicemen.

Schroeder, 23, of Cleveland, and 13 more Marines from the Ohio-based battalion were killed Wednesday along with a civilian interpreter in the deadliest roadside bombing in Iraq.

The Marines’ deaths, along with two others slain July 28, brought the battalion’s toll to 21 in a week. Eleven of those were part of the same Columbus-based unit, Lima Company, that lost four Marines in a single day in May.

Will every town in American have to loose double digit lives before the headlines read "America's Families Fed Up"?

1. People of Ohio.
The Republicans foisted this war on you. For that, they must pay. You must throw these people out on their asses. All of them.

7. It's sad that this is the event
that should finally, FINALLY wake Ohioans up to the fact that the liquid manure holding the Blight House (and the state) hostage needs to GO. NOW.

But them Southwesterners . . . man, we're talking some HEADstrong bastards here and they're numerous, unfortunately. We in the North and Southeast (and of course our friends on the island of Franklin and Athens counties) can only do SO much - DUH-High-ah is a virtual sea of red as high as Ashland County. Their Repukes will go headfirst into hellfire for whoever had an "R" next to their name, even if he's as cornpone dumbassed as Bob Taft. Just not much changing that. Many of them don't so much like Republicans as they HATE Democrats. They're still in the "Demmycrats = Mawnicuh" mindset and love pseudo-hick bullies.

3. I'm from this area
actually where I grew up is right between the two batallions in Lima and Brookpark that lost so many. I don't know any of them or their families, but I feel particularly depressed by this news. It's just such a waste of lives. There was a mother & father on CNN this morning who lost their son & the father was saying how his son's unit had supposedly cleared Haditha of insurgents not long ago and they just kept coming back. He said that his son had originally been optimistic about helping Iraqis, but more lately had talked about how fruitless their mission was. It was particularly sad to see these people dealing with their son's death & the idea that he had at first been enthusiastic to do the "right thing" & then become disillusioned before dying for no good reason at all.

5. not to sound cruel
but why does there have to be a large concentration of casualties from one unit or state for people to start getting outraged?
Are we selfish as a people? Where's the outrage for each individial person that's on Bush's butcher's bill.

9. I honestly am upset about all the casualties.
But being from this area makes it more personal for me. I agree that the media attention is a bit insincere when they focus on 21 deaths in particular, but virtually ignore 1779 because they're scatter over the country, however seeing a particular locale devestated by losses creates more of a narrative & allows what usually is emotionally overwhelming to become more accessible to more people.

14. The people from Ohio aren't fed up enough
or else Blackwell wouldn't still be sitting at the controls of the biggest election scandal of the century.
They had a choice to put one of their finest in as a representative.
They didn't do it. Instead, they allowed the right wing machine to attempt to destroy one of their Marines.
I'm getting a little low on empathy these days. Ohio can force the change. Question is will they?

17. I saw one of the mothers on local news last night
This armory is right here in Cleveland so they ran a lot of stories on it. The one mother (Lance Cpl. Lance Schroeder) was asked if she had anything to say to president bush and she said "Not that can be said on TV". She went on to say that this was an illegal war and her son didn't know when he joined. It wasn't until he found out that georgie had this planned before 911 that her son got pissed off. It was some heavy stuff coming from a mother that just lost her son. I have a feeling that more and more families of the dead will be speaking out. Of course the chickenhawk repukes will then tell the loved ones of the fallen soldiers to "shut up and get over it".

21. those who have no sympathy left for those in Ohio should read your post
there are good people who lost their children for no good reason. Saying you have no sympathy for all Ohioans is equivalent to someone hating all Americans for re-electing *. Ohio is just as divided as the whole country is & just because the state didn't go blue, doesn't mean these people deserved to lose their children!

27. This armory is smack dab in the middle of Cuyahoga county
We voted 60%+ Kerry in the election. Not that it matters much to people who want to hate us, but there is nothing I can do about it.
It's sad because I am mainly around liberals where I live and have been all my life. My family has been in the Cleveland area since the 1880s and are and were all Democrats. I will stay here and fight to turn us blue. Taft is doing a good job screwing his party here and hopefully people open their eyes soon. taft is in the middle of accusations showing just how corrupt his party has been here in Ohio and if the shit hits the fan, we might just be able to go blue. It is almost 50/50 here and I see it turning.

35. Schroeder's sister had a huge anti-war statement on NPR's
Morning Edition this morning. It was also so very sad because they talked about all the good work Lance had done for others. They talked about how he sought to serve his community by becoming a life guard, EMT (or some other certified emergency personnel), etc. He sounded like a brilliant, sensitive young man. Our world is lessened by losses like this. I'm sure the other families' sons and daughters were equally valuable.

56. Yes, she said it.
The part where she commented on not being able to say her message to bush on TV was only shown in the previews of the news, but they showed it about 4 times in the half hour before the news.
I was a bit blown away that they showed her saying the things she did, but maybe the tide is changing. I am thinking that the media is sick of being used by this administration and they might get back to being the "liberal media" again. In other words, telling the truth.

29. well, i think humanity calls for empathy for pain of another human
doesnt justify or validate the wrongs of the war. doesnt take away the responsibility for a person signing up for this. it is merely a union with another in the time of their pain they will experience in the loss of someone they love. i dont think that is asking to much from us as a human.

23. "Name of dead" died doing what they loved best...
Have you heard this line used by the media again, and again?

These disrespectful "news" stories almost always seem to end with that phrase. If I've heard it once, I've heard just about as many times as there are dead soldiers from this Iraq debacle and it just infuriates me!

Sometimes the presstitute attributes the comment to a parent or loved one, sometimes I think they just say it because it sound so "good and patriotic". I think it is vile and disgusting.

Did they really love being in a pointless war and killing other people? ...or is that just something that the media think is grand and glorious to say about a fallen soldier? It's just ROTTEN!
