Jurors Award Damages Over White Administrator's Loss of Job

Jurors find that race was a factor in a white woman's loss of her job as an assistant school principal in Kansas City.
The Jackson County Circuit Court jury awarded Sue Gorker $31,000 in compensatory damages from the Kansas City School District.
The 51-year-old Gorker had been a vice principal at the Paul Robeson Middle School when her contract was not renewed after the 2002-2003 school year. The suit she filed in January 2004 described a hostile work environment and alleged that a black supervising principal treated her differently than colleagues.
The district's lawyer denied that Gorker's job change was influenced by her race and said the verdict may be appealed.
