would do best in a national election?

Pick someone who fits both criteria listed above.


Sorry this Poll is so early but to be honest I want to see how some of the more obscure candidates will do in this poll. I am picking candidates that I believe would do well in a national election. I am putting in Bill Moyer's because he won the poll of unlikely Democratic candidates the other day.

thats just a fact. While I love her and think she rocks she would not play well across a broad spectrum in this nutty country. I considered putting Schultz from Florida on but don't know enough about her. From what I have seen I think she would be a very sharp candidate.

21. The poll was based not on who I like but on who I thought would

do best in a national election. I decided to go ahead and put Hillary in because she is the front runner and certainly will be a force to be reckoned with.

I threw Bill Moyers in because he won a poll on here the other day. I wanted to see how he would do against the mainstream candidates everyone always talks about. Same for Sweitzer. I disagree that Moyer's would not do better than Boxer but thats just my opinion. Even if he hasn't said he is running doesn't mean he might not. Perhaps their should be a draft Moyer's movement.

Leaving off Kerry was a tough choice but it seems a lot of people have a bad taste in their mouth with Kerry here on DU because he rolled over in Ohio. Kerry never did very well on DU polls yet he won the nomination. I expect he will do worse now on DU polls yet he still might win the nomination. I wish I had another five slots to fill in but I don't so I have to pick and chose and of course their will be a few her on DU who won't like the choices. I picked the candidates I thought would be the strongest 10 but their are probably five more names I would like to see in this poll including Feingold, Kerry, Obama, Schultz and Richardson.

It's too late for me to edit the poll but if I could edit it I would put in Kerry and take out Warner.

It's easy for someone like Gore to be tough when he isn't running for office. The real measure was when he did run, and he lacked backbone and conviction in that election. We need a principled candidate who isn't afraid to take a stand on issues and knows how to articulate his views in ways that appeal to voters.

Or do you think he just got some perspective by taking that step back. Refreshed, reinvigorated, and reinforced?

I think the man is much like Clark in that he avoided those last few deadly, pressurized years....but also studied, learned, and came out much like Paul Hackett and my MAN Governor Howard Dean, M.D. His MoveOn speeches are QUITE FUCKING EXTRAORDINARY AND HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, for those who haven't seen them or read them. He's an entirely different person- which isn't even meant to take away from who he was...Let's say different from your typical Democrat TODAY.

Besides, Gore was V.P. during the best eight years our country has ever seen. You must agree with that. And he also has sworn off the mistakes he made DURING that time...and has shown it.

I think Gore would be an unbelievable candidate, especially in the primaries.

I think he'd win, and it would be worth it.

that voters respond to. Perhaps you're right that he's changed. But I believe we have to do better to retake the WH.

I put no stock in his recent speeches. He had nothing on the line. His 2000 performance is more indicative of what he's likely to do if he runs again. I imagine he has learned, but I doubt he'd be what you imagine. And then the media and GOP have countless variants of his personality to play on. Which is the real Al Gore? Voters won't know.

Besides, we need to look to the future, not the past.

12. Gore, Edwards, Feingold

would be my top three choices out of those who I have heard mentioned. I think all three would have a chance at winning a national election in '08, and all three have different strengths and weaknesses. However, I'm pretty sure Gore won't run and I haven't heard anything definite regarding Feingold; I have a feeling Edwards will end up making another run for it. Really, I guess I'll be making a decision closer to the election; I'm open to another candidate if someone really captures my attention but for now those are my top three choices as they are three of my favorite politicians.

I want someone who walks the walk in terms of a voting record,
straight talker and who isn't going to get bought...

and Dean pisses me off right now with his corporate illegal immigration stance.

How about Bryan Dorgan? He's always seemingly doing good things.

What about Barbara Boxer, she is completely kick ass and someone I could support.

I watch Dorgan and I've yet to see him say, vote or do anything I thought was "corporate" or a lie.

26. Mark Warner, totally.

I'm all kinds of into him for running for Pres - he's progressive, smart, balanced the budget in VA, PLUS he offered some great tax incentives to pet owners who spay and neuter their pets :thumbsup: Now that's a Dem after my own heart!

27. The two criteria are widely different

Unless all posters are picking their candidates solely with a view to odds of winning, as opposed to how closely their values match their own, or unless there's a great deal of wishful thinking going on, the answers to the two are very unlikely to be the same.

Possibly two different polls?

What would be very interesting, if there was a way to set it up, would be a square grid, indexed on both axes with the names of the candidates, so that people could tick a box indicating both who they supported and who they thought would be most likely to win.

On DU, I would expect Wes Clark, Boxer etc to do much better than Bayh and the like on the "whom do you support" axis, but the discrepancy might well be much less marked on the "who would be most likely to win".

For it seems that each and every one of those people will be taking corporate cash. What we don't need is another corporate whore in office.

If Kucinich was up there, then I would vote for him, since he takes no corporate cash. But with these bunch of corporate cow, I'll pass and go Green.
