Conservative journalist and author Steven C. Vincent, 49, was kidnapped, shot and killed in the southern port city of Basra, Iraq. Basra, under British military control is not considered as dangerous as most of the northern Iraqi cities are. The city and region is known for having very little insurgent attacks.
Mr. Vincent, who writes for the National Review, the Christian Science Monitor as well as the New York Times, was traveling with his interpreter and close friend, Nooriya Tuaiz, 30. They were working on a book concerning the rise of conservative Shiite Islam and its influence on, and involvement with, the corruption of the Iraqi Police.
Craig Crawford, one of Washington DC’s most popular political commentators, while appearing on the Imus in Morning radio show this morning, stated that it was widely believed, but under-reported, that the kidnappers wore Iraqi Police uniforms.
Mr. Vincent, one of over 20 journalist killed in Iraq over the last year, appears to have murdered to prevent his article from being published. Just last week in an e-mail to Steven Mumford, his roommate in Baghdad, stated that he "had a lot of information which, if published in a major venue, he could get killed for it."
