Let Freedom Reign! ...Reporter killed for telling the truth.
Conservative journalist and author Steven C. Vincent, 49, was kidnapped, shot and killed in the southern port city of Basra, Iraq. Basra, under British military control is not considered as dangerous as most of the northern Iraqi cities are. The city and region is known for having very little insurgent attacks.

Mr. Vincent, who writes for the National Review, the Christian Science Monitor as well as the New York Times, was traveling with his interpreter and close friend, Nooriya Tuaiz, 30. They were working on a book concerning the rise of conservative Shiite Islam and its influence on, and involvement with, the corruption of the Iraqi Police.

Craig Crawford, one of Washington DC’s most popular political commentators, while appearing on the Imus in Morning radio show this morning, stated that it was widely believed, but under-reported, that the kidnappers wore Iraqi Police uniforms.

Mr. Vincent, one of over 20 journalist killed in Iraq over the last year, appears to have murdered to prevent his article from being published. Just last week in an e-mail to Steven Mumford, his roommate in Baghdad, stated that he "had a lot of information which, if published in a major venue, he could get killed for it."

1. Two things
One -- He was conservative? Says who? He certainly didn't write for conservative papers. The NY Times and the CSM are hardly bastions of conservative thought.

Two -- That e-mail could easily have been refering to his final article, published just before his death, criticizing Basra police, who then murdered him.

3. Thanks....
Hi,

I called him a conservative because that I what I had read in a couple articles about the murder. Also, it was reported that he was a supporter of the war in Iraq and believed that it was part of the so called "war on terror".

I removed the word "conservative" from my blog though as you may be correct and I could be wrong.

Thanks for the heads up.

4. Labels are so confining.
Three or four kinds of labels, millions of people.

In any event, here's a link to an obit, at the end of which is a list of stories (w/ links) that he wrote for the publication 'printing' the obit:

http://nationalreview.com/lopez/lopez200508030843.asp

They may not have been the only one that printed his writings (WSJ did, too), but I do note the decided absence of many 'liberal' writers on their site.

2. sad that he was killed -- but funny that the ugly side of
our ''liberating'' iraq becomes more visible every day.

as the evidence begins to reach critical mass -- it will be fun to watch conservatives trot out their excuses for the lack of democracy and the rampant corruption.

you have to remember conservatives believe in the rule of law -- as long as it is somebody else doing the behaving.
