Does this mean Blair will shut down Fundie Christian Churches?
British PM cracks down on extremism
Last Updated Fri, 05 Aug 2005 08:32:41 EDT
CBC News

British Prime Minister Tony Blair unveiled sweeping new measures Friday that include deporting anyone deemed a threat to the country, and closing places of worship found to be advocating acts of extremism.
Tony Blair in London, Friday.

"Let no one be in doubt that the rules of the game are changing," Blair said. "If you come to our country from abroad, don't meddle in extremism."

His comments came in London as he unveiled a 12-point plan.

It includes:

* Allowing Britain to deport anyone who fosters hatred, or advocates violence to further beliefs, or justifies acts of violence.
* Making it an offence to condone or glorify terrorism.
* Automatically refusing asylum to anyone who has participated in extremist violence anywhere.
* "Better integration" for people living in Britain who are "presently inadequately integrated."
* A new power to order the closure of any place of worship that is used as a centre for fomenting extremism."

3. Ahh but like a retrovirus, they keep showing up everywhere!
In my days of being enslaved in a fundie Junior High school, I remember being told about a missionary in London the school supported.

11. For your Information: France and Fundies :
the law that the UK is about to pass alrady exists in France and several hate preaching imams have already been expulsed, 8 are right now on the way of being it.

- I can tell you that if anyone in France preaches against gays, jews, muslims and bashes them the way many of US preachers (and others) do, this person :

- if French is sentenced normally to a fine and a suspended prison sentence. A second offense would normally result in a firm prison sentence. Hasn't happened yet.

if non-French, this person is deported immediately.

And seriously :

when will the Democratic party REALLY pass a law that forbids hate preaching in Churches ? And put in jail "preachers" breaking that law ? When ?

And PLEASE don't give me the arguments of "freedom of speech" and "freedom of religion". Because those two freedoms "they hate us for" are overruled by hate speech.

6. See Hitler Got his wish
In the image of Tony Blair, too bad Adolph didn't live long enough to see his wishes come to fruition. I'm sure he'd give Tony and George a big hug and kiss.

Closing any place of worship that is used as a centre for formenting
extremism? Wasn't this the reason why the Pilgrims left England in the first place?

How long before George and his Repuke supporters think about doing the same thing here? And please don't anyone say that it won't happen here, because we know that it can.

And to answer your question, no this won't apply to fundamentalist
Christian churches.

8. No
Blair needs fundies for his agenda like bush
They are targeting dark skinned people, people who might threaten the hegemonies that dominate England. The fundies don't threaten England's power structure, really.

10. while I don't like that it's happening
nor do I like Blair, I like the phrase he used: "those who have exploited religious freedom"

A free democracy is like a rose garden. If you want your roses to bloom, then you had better know the difference between a weed and a rose, because the weeds will choke out your roses every time. The defining line is violence and instigation to violence - that part at least is easy to identify. The hard part is when you start defining Wahabi Islam and Southern Baptists ;) as an anti-democratic or theocratic sociopolitical ideology of political terror that just happens to practice religion. Which is it? A religion or an anti-democratic socio-political ideology?

When the founding fathers had some great ideas about law and the practice of religion I don't believe they had encountered radical religious beliefs whose tenets do not tolerate other religions, nonreligious government, or democracies, and whose tools are subversion, terrorism, and violence against dissidents.

I wonder what bar they would have set had they been faced with the same weeds.

13. I thought I read somewhere that Blair is extremely
religious himself and may be castigated as a "fundie" himself. In fact, I think I read that some time ago on one of these boards in a thread.
