What did Novak mean by "Just let it go"?
I think that is a secret code for something.
"Just let it go."

1. My theory is that he was talking back to the producer, re: "BULLSHIT".
Edited on Fri Aug-05-05 12:09 PM by BlueEyedSon
other folks have suggested it was aimed at Carville, that he should drop the subject of his "backbone" of lack thereof

22. If Novak had an ear piece then Carville had an ear piece -
although since they were quests not moderators I am not certain they would have been hooked up but if so, that explains why Carville had so little reaction to Novak's actions. He knew it was coming in response to something the producer was telling Novak - like get off the set.

15. I don't think it was about the language.
Begala and Carville apparently have been a bit colorful themselves.

27. "sonofabitch worse than "kickmyass," but not by much AND ...
it depends on who's saying it.
If it was the Queen of England saying those two things,
then "kickmyass" would be worse.
If it was the Pope,
then "sonofabitch" would be worse.

Edited on Fri Aug-05-05 12:11 PM by tasteblind
And he was responding, in vain, to let the cursing go, as if it didn't happen.

I said earlier that Bob Novak is more wired into the Administration than most cabinet officials. He probably tells CNN what to do. Maybe CNN is through taking orders.

But that doesn't really make sense because it was live. I really think Novak was zonked on something, his eyes were screwed up more than usual.

Maybe he has a Rove earpiece too?

It was something he picked up from an anger management class CNN forced him to attend a while back.

He went on to say, "everyday, in every way, I'm getting better...and better!!!" once he was off camera.

19. I thought he meant just let the issue go
he'd been trying to prop up Kathryn Harris when Carville started digging at him, I thought he meant he didn't want to go back to the subject. That the anchor was going back to him to let him answer but he decided he didn't want to.

He may have heard something through his ear piece like "settle down, watch your language" but he looked drunk.

His next column will talk about how:
1. he's on pain meds for some awful ailment (his hip?) and that's why he seemed drunk and
2. he's the victim. Poor baby.

33. Yes. That's what he said on CSPAN...
It was 2 days ago I think, at some young Republicans'
conference. He went on at length about how the students
were going to be disappointed if they expected him to
"cheerlead" for Bushco because he was a journalist and
all, and a registered Democrat, and "not a very good
Republican" and "not a very good cheerleader, in fact,
not a cheerleader at all." Registered Democrat in
Washington, D.C. When you read a Novak column, you're
going to get at least one fact that you never heard before,
he said. Hmmm, wonder what he was thinking of when he said
that???

he always seems to repeat any repub talking point that is out there that will make a democrat look bad. I don't consider him a journalist, but an opinionated editorial writer.

If you have any links to the fact he is a democrat, could you send them to me? Just curious.

37. Links on Novak being as Registered Dem...
I heard him say itat the "National Conservative Student Conference"
at Cornell University in Washington, D.C., run yesterday on CSPAN.
There was no doubt about what he said. He made quite a
big deal about it, being a "registered Democrat in Washington
D.C." They don't have a transcript on the CSPAN site.
But here's a couple cites:

SNL Crossfire: I remember the good ol' days (twenty years ago) when CNNs Crossfire was broadcast from a darkened studio with three chairs. You had Pat Buchanan and Tom Braden (soon to be followed by Michael Kinsley) and a guest. Period. Come to think of it the set was very much like what you see on the late night PBS Charlie Rose show. I've only watched the new Crossfire format a couple of times and I really hate it. Mark Hemingway of TheAmericanProwler writes about the day he attended a taping of the infomercial shoutfest. It's worse than I thought.

As a side note, I like his characterization of Tucker Carlson and was surprised to learn that Robert Novak is a registered Democrat.

Novak, on the other hand, while well respected in conservative circles, is still a registered Democrat and could never be accused of toeing the Republican party line. As for Carlson, he was aptly described by a New York Press writer as "a young Republican whose favorite target is older Republicans."

Another:

"The next accusation is that Wilson is a partisan who was trying to discredit the President before the election. It has been reported that Wilson made a donation to Al Gore's campaign. What is not widely reported is that he also made a donation to the Bush-Cheney campaign in 2000 and ultimately voted for Bush. After his wife's name was leaked he campaigned against President Bush. He is a registered Democrat, but that is relatively meaningless in Washington, D.C. because most people do not vote in the Republican primary. Even Robert Novak is a registered Democrat for that reason."

Apparently in his younger days he was a supporter of Democrats (JFK & LBJ), but he has drifted far to the right since those days.

I think that a producer probably ran his finger across his throat and Novak had to leave.

Read an online bio of Novak recently, and I found out that Novak was the creator of both Crossfire and Capital Gang. He hired the other people on those shows. On Capital Gang he had Shields acting as host, when Novak was actually the boss. (Novak fired Mona Charen several years ago when she crossed him, and hired Kate O'Beirne as Charen's replacement.) So it appears that CNN has been easing him out by cancelling both his pet programs. This was their perfect chance to kick his sorry butt out. I bet even other RW'ers can't abide that old evil asshole.

LBJ once said: "You don't have to tell me when Novak's in the room ... I can smell him."

38. And how ironic that Mr. Tough Guy Who Outs Valerie Plame,
a hatchet man going after another man through his wife,
blows a gasket after having his manhood questioned,
which is basically what Carville did, saying that Novak
was pretending to be a tough guy so that other RW tough guys
& WSJ editorial page tough guys would admire him. Freaking
pitiful. And the whole freaking WAR (remember that little
thing?) from Bush's POV is MAINLY him getting back at the
bad man that his Pop couldn't beat in '91.
