they may have been WAITING for some obvious slipup to ditch him. If they had fired him for Plamegate, it would have been illegal since no charges have been filed. You can't fire someone who might have been cooperating with authorites in a trial.
Even though WE know he's a traitor, there are vulnerabilities you leave yourself open to for firing without "just cause".

He has never been accused, much less convicted, of any crime regarding Plame. I'd expect the news organization I work for to stand up for me in similar circumstances.
He was suspended for the one violation they KNOW he committed. What more would you have them do?
