"What Have We Done?"

by Dahr Jamail

August 5, 2005

As the blood of US soldiers continues to drain into the hot sands of Iraq over the last several days with at least 27 US soldiers killed and the approval rating for his handling of the debacle in Iraq dropping to an all-time low of 38%, Mr. Bush commented from the comforts of his ranch in Crawford, Texas today, “We will stay the course, we will complete the job in Iraq.”

<clip>

When asked what he would say to Mr. Bush if he had the chance to speak to him, Abdul Henderson, a corporal in the Marines who served in Iraq from March until May, 2003, took a deep breath and said, “It would be two hits-me hitting him and him hitting the floor. I see this guy in the most prestigious office in the world, and this guy says ‘bring it on.’ A guy who ain’t never been shot at, never seen anyone suffering, saying ‘bring it on?’ He gets to act like a cowboy in a western movie … it’s sickening to me.”

The other vets with him nod in agreement as he speaks somberly … his anger seething.

One of them, Alex Ryabov, a corporal in an artillery unit which was in Iraq the first three months of the invasion, asked for some time to formulate his response to the same question. “I don’t think Bush will ever realize how many millions of lives he and his lackeys have ruined on their quest for money, greed and power,” he says, “To take the patriotism of the American people for granted … the fact that people (his administration) are willing to lie and make excuses for you while you continue to kill and maim the youth of America and ruin countless families … and still manage to do so with a smile on your face.”

What Dahr Jamail reports is being discussed in Dallas with Veterans and what Mr Galloway has said today are consistent with what many of us understood before Bush began his illegal war on Iraq.

"What we say is we refuse to be part of a conspiracy to deny that it has anything to do with the fact that our country is going round the world setting fire to other people's countries and killing them.

"I think there is hardly a sentient being in the land left who doesn't believe these things are connected.

"I am utterly against the punishing of innocent people for the crimes of the guilty, whether it is done on the underground in London or the streets of Fallujah by George Bush's air force."

He repeated his view that it was Mr Bush who was the world's "biggest terrorist" .....

Let's frame those comments in the context of two more quotes from Dahr Jamal's interviews with Iraq war Veterans:

Tharp jumps in and adds, “Most of what we’re talking about is war crimes … war crimes because they are directed by our government for power projection. My easy answer for not going is PTSD … but the deeper moral reason is that I didn’t want to be involved in a crime against humanity.”

Ryabov then adds, “We were put in a foreign country to fire artillery and kill people … and it shouldn’t have even happened in the first place. It’s hard to put into words the full tragedy of it-the death and suffering on both sides. I feel a grave injustice has been done and I’m trying to correct it. You do all these things and come back and think, what have we done?”

And, the words of Iraq Veteran Charlie Anderson could not be a more fitting stance for any ethical, responsible Member of Congress, as well as truly patriotic American citizens, to take:

“You subverted us, you destroyed our lives, you owe us. I want your resignation in my hand in the next five minutes. Get packin’ Georgie.”

We must do all we can to force the complicit media to listen to these veterans and to broadcast their visit to war criminal-in-chief Bush when they attempt to speak to him at his ranch, tomorrow. Here's the relevant press release:

Peace.

www.missionnotaccomplished.us - How ever long it takes, the day must come when tens of millions of caring individuals peacefully but persistently defy the dictator, deny the corporatists their cash flow, and halt the evil being done in Iraq and in all the other places the Bu$h neoconster regime is destroying civilization and the environment in the name of "America."

6. And why can't the media get some of these folks on camera?
There is no shortage of people who've been saying for more than two and a half years what a mess we've got on our hands, how the United States is squandering its military, its treasury, and its prestige for nothing.

Yet the only people you ever see on the evening news are grieving parents and widows talking about "gittin' the job done" and "stayin' the course" as if those liturgical formulations have any meaning in the real world. They might as well be at a Pentecostal meeting speaking in tongues.

But when real people with real reasons and real evidence and examples speak out against the national insanity, the cameras zoom in on the guy with the rainbow fright wig because he's visual. I hope every administration figure who goes to prison for war crimes has one of his or her favorite embedded journalists as a cell mate. Then they can spin their lies and the journalists can faithfully record every fucking word. For life.

Steven Vincent,Reporter and Blogger

From War And Piece: http://www.warandpiece.com/blogdirs/002340.html

Steven Vincent, the journalist who authored the interesting Basra op ed in the New York Times on Sunday, has been killed, shot multiple times after getting abducted with his translator. (He blogged here as well). NPR's Philip Reeves says that Vincent and his translator were abducted outside his hotel by people in a white pick up with "police" written on it, but no license plate. (Vincent describes a similar vehicle used by police loyal to radical Shiite clerics to commit sectarian assassinations in his op ed). His translator Ward al-Khal was shot through the chest, and is hospitalized.

According to Reporters Without Borders, Steven Vincent is the 64th journalist to die in Iraq since March, 2003.

57. I'm wondering how long it will be before that honest kid is brought up on
...charges???

No dissing the commander in chief, that is why no one will speak. There is no ambiguity there. If the seniors want, they can make that kid's life a living hell, and I will bet they will. That kid must've slept through his boot camp UCMJ training, either that or he is so fed up he just does not give a shit anymore.

The draftees in Vietnam had a different take--what could be worse than this situation we are in now??? Leavenworth would be a cakewalk in comparison.

Today's military actually MADE the CHOICE...of course, they never imagined that they would be so misused, abused, and disrespected by those appointed over them. They bought a lie, because they believed that we were in our essence a good and fair nation. Not their fault for being conned...the shame belongs to those who conned them.

7. Briliant post -- and look at this
from the Iraq Dispatch blog link:

Camilo Mejia was then quick to point towards the success of his organization and his colleagues. “When I went back to Iraq in October of 2003, the Pentagon said there were 22 AWOL’s. Five months later it was 500, and when I got out of jail (he spent a year in jail for refusing to go back to Iraq) that number was 5,000. These are the Pentagons’ numbers for the military. Two things are significant here-the number went from 500-5,000 in 11 months, and these are the numbers from the Pentagon.”

16. Tom Hayden: An Exit Plan from War and Occupation
Edited on Fri Aug-05-05 06:52 PM by understandinglife
In response to calls from peace groups, an ad hoc coalition of Congressmembers will begin hearings on an Iraq exit strategy next month. Here is a working paper to that end:

An Exit Plan from War and Occupation (summary)

By Tom Hayden

August 5, 2005

TURN TOWARDS PEACE, NOT QUAGMIRE. It is time to turn American power towards peace in Iraq through diplomacy, trade, economic development, and respect for Iraqi rights to self-determination. While some Americans may still claim “victories” - the defeat of a dictator, the birth of democratic elections - it is clear that the costs of our continued war and occupation are greater than any benefits. We are all prisoners of this war.

(Other topic overviews include):

COSTS OUTWEIGH BENEFITS.

THERE IS NO MILITARY SOLUTION.

RECONSTRUCTION IS IMPOSSIBLE UNDER OCCUPATION.

ACKNOWLEDGE LIMITS, SET NEW DIRECTION.

We must turn from the model of war and occupation to a primary emphasis on conflict resolution. Here are ten steps ....

Full details at the link:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/theblog/archive/tom-hayden/the-exit-plan-from-iraq_5216.html

As Mr Hayden concludes: "These steps might be painful and bitter for some, but the truth is that it is folly to believe that the US government can gain through negotiations what it cannot achieve on the battlefield, and it is immoral, dishonest, unrealistic and counter-productive to keep sending young Americans to die in a quagmire.

Instead of “staying the course”, the prudent path is to change the course, beginning now."

I urge everyone to read and distribute, widely. As I also urge everyone to visit with your Congressional representatives and press them to begin demanding Bush and Cheney's resignation, or else ... IMPEACHMENT.

Peace.

73. All of Tom Hayden's ten steps are excellent, and represent some
hard thinking about the dreadful mistakes of Vietnam. This one is the most critically important:

3. The US should request the United Nations to organize the reconstruction effort and to monitor the military withdrawal process. This request will only be taken seriously in the context of a US announcement of withdrawal.

Read them all, though. They are a well thought out program for peace.

And at home?

1. Election reform for the U.S. No more Bushite electronic voting machine companies tabulating all the votes with secret, proprietary software. (Jeez...)

2. Constititutional reform re: presidential war powers so that it NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN.

3. Reparations from war profiteers. Prosecution of war crimes and other crimes committed to facilitate illegal war.

4. A Truth and Reconciliation Commission (as they did in South Africa), to de-politicize and facilitate truth-telling, and heal our country.

Certainly not you or the other politicians and apologists for the carnage.

No, not the children of privelage who talk so grandly of the "failed insurgency", and so disdainfully of those who question and oppose the murder.

No, you will sleep soundly and use the dead and dying, the maimed and crazy, to justify the horror by calling them "sacifices" and "heroes" instead of taking responsibility for their fate, and calling them what they are, young men and women needlessly killed or maimed to further your political fortune.

Count yourself fortunate and smirk for the cameras because you will probably escape justice, just as your bloody handed predecessors did.

35. Proud to nominate. Two more agents of karma, with accelerating
power: the returning vets, and the good people of Britain who like us are appalled at the crimes we've witnessed.

These criminals will be undone by their ignorance of karma, entropy, the true meaning of democracy, and basic human decency.

Let's continue helping to speed up the process.

38. What Have We Done, is right...
To our Troops, their families, our future generations, our country and our world.

Now, tally-up all of that and does it equate to the amount of sleep any of the war-profiteers have lost?

I'm thinking right now of the (MSN/GE/HALLIBURTON/BECHTEL and fill in the blanks), all in 5 1/2 short years from the worse administration ever; destroying us like never before!

Frist has probably made a killing on script meds. No wonder 2/3rd's of Americans are taking some sort of anti-depressent, and nerve pills.

Dying for your country isnt the most difficult thing that can be asked of you, killing for it is.

71. Army staff sergeant Camilo Mejia
Camilo Mejia, an army staff sergeant who was sentenced to a year in military prison in May, 2004 for refusing to return to Iraq after being home on leave, talks openly about what he did there:

“What it all comes down to is redemption for what was done there. I was turning ambulances away from going to hospitals, I killed civilians, I tortured guys…and I’m ashamed of that. Once you are there, it has nothing to do with politics…it has to do with you as an individual being there and killing people for no reason. There is no purpose, and now I’m sick at myself for doing these things. I kept telling myself I was there for my buddies. It was a weak reasoning…because I still shut my mouth and did my job."

74. My heart goes out to Camilo Mejia! He is among the most courageous
of men! Peacefulness and truthfulness require tremendous bravery. Men need to learn this. Warfare requires a certain kind of physical and psychic courage, no matter what the circumstances. But peace requires far more--it requires your all: your spirit, your mind, your creativity, your courage, your ethics, your patience, your love, your strength, and all of your skills and resources.

I've been following Sgt. Mejia's story since he first decided not to return to Iraq. It was so wrenching to see him punished for doing the right thing, while war criminals like Bush and Cheney are free to enrich themselves and their friends through the deaths of others. And I am so glad that Sgt. Mejia survived that wrongful punishment, and is able to speak out.

We are very blest to have this truthteller and peace-maker among us. Sgt. Mejia's refusal to return to Iraq was one my first moments of hope in a very dark time. Profound thanks to you, Camilo!

76. Indeed "Peacefulness and truthfulness require tremendous bravery."

Staff Sgt. Camilo Mejia, an infantry squad leader with the Florida National Guard, is shown in this photo provided by his family, taken while Mejia was on active duty in Iraq, no date provided. Mejia was sentenced Friday, May 21, 2004, to a year in jail and a bad conduct discharge after a military jury in Georgia found him guilty of desertion for leaving his combat unit in Iraq in protest of what he called ``oil-driven'' war.

Staff Sgt. Camilo Mejia, right, and his attorney Louis Font prepare to speak to reporters Wednesday, May 19, 2004, during a news conference in Fort Stewart, Ga., after the first day of his court-martial. Mejia, 28, is charged with desertion after failing to return to his unit in Iraq after a two-week furlough in October.

www.missionnotaccomplished.us - How ever long it takes, the day must come when tens of millions of caring individuals peacefully but persistently defy the dictator, deny the corporatists their cash flow, and halt the evil being done in Iraq and in all the other places the Bu$h neoconster regime is destroying civilization and the environment in the name of "America."
