Hiroshima survivor visits Crawford: Urges Bush to never consider nukes

A survivor of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima said he hopes that President Bush never considers using a nuclear option to solve global conflict.

The cost would be too high, said Satoru Konishi, 76, a retired professor of German literature at Tokyo Metropolitan University. He was less than three miles from ground zero when the Enola Gay dropped “Little Boy” and obliterated his childhood home 60 years ago today.

An anti-nuclear activist for 30 years, Konishi is making a stop at 10 a.m. Aug. 6 at the Crawford Peace House on his way to commemorative services in Austin. He said he hopes to visit with others who come for the short visit. ...

“We have seen the end of the world,” he said. “If ordinary people knew the atrocities of nuclear warfare, we would move mountains to never allow our governments to behave in this way. We must change this situation.”
