Inquiry Into Lobbyist Sputters After Demotion
The unusual financial deal between Jack Abramoff and officials in Guam drew scrutiny.

WASHINGTON — A U.S. grand jury in Guam opened an investigation of controversial lobbyist Jack Abramoff more than two years ago, but President Bush removed the supervising federal prosecutor and the inquiry ended soon after.

Will he do the same thing to Fitzgerald's boss?

10. It certainly establishes an ugly precedent.

If you don't like the nature of the investigation, fire the prosecutor. The fact that this is all taking place on Guam and the Marianas makes it a little easier to slip it under the public radar, though. I don't think Mr. Fitzgerald will go as gently into that good night--the firing of Archibald Cox was the last straw even for many of Nixon's former allies in the congress. If PFitz goes, I think House and Senate Republicans of good conscience (and there are still a few) woud be forced to consider moving toward impeachment. My guess is that PFitz has already got sealed indictments ready to go against Rove and Libby, and is now working on firming up those cases. Firing his boss and replacing him with a fellow bonesman is a way for Bushco to get information, and possibly derail the grand jury. Which means that Bush himself is extraordinarily concerned with how the investigation appears to be developing. It's possible that Cheney and Bush are implicated, but I'd be shocked if they were indicted. That would be too much to hope for.
