They thought the public would buy it, and they were right.

6. Sadly, yes.
It seems it takes at least half a decade and nearly 2000 dead American soldiers for the general populace to pay attention to anything other than American Idol or the latest Survivor tripe. While I'm glad so many seem to be waking up finally, part of me wants to slap the shit out of them in frustration, as many of us have been screaming about this shit for over six years.

I'm about ready to go off on the next person who says, "Okay, we shouldn't have invaded, but we did, so how do we fix it now?"

There is no way to fix it. The only solution is not to have done it in the first place.

3. The incompetence of this administration rivals their wickedness . . .
But I think they convinced themselves that it would be a cakewalk, Iraqis would love us, Chalabi would be able to tidily sew up a coalition in a few months, and everything would be ducky before the opposition figured out which end was up.

Their inability to figure out consequences and plan for them is at the heart of their incompetence. They seem to latch onto the first idea that pleases them and say "yeah, that's great, what's next?" -- without any real thought that maybe they DIDN'T get it right the first time.

Add to that the fact that they're constitutionally unable to admit error and you've got the mess we're in now.

5. Yeah I voted for the first option. Figured they'd have all of the sheep &
enough of the smarter but lazy people in the early going, and then by the time it became more clear that it was all lies, America would be enamored of its newfound military glory in victory, and awash in all the petrobucks coming our way from our new colony, that the huge majority would not care about the blood and skeletons underneath the whole thing.

And sadly, I think if it HAD been "cheap and easy" (much fewer deaths and much lower cost of military action), they would have been right. I think the average person doesn't have enough ethics to care about having invaded another country for no good reason, as long as it doesn't "cost".

17. Voted for the first too
Mainly because I percieved it as being the thought they would go in, start up after fixing the oil wells and getting everything taken care of like that. Instead they're having a lot more problems than they suggested.

I think I figured it ou in December on the 22nd when Bush said, "Oil from Iraq would pay for the Iraq War."

7. Um...they did.
The war is almost 900 days old now. For the first six months of the occupation, 70% of the country thought Hussein was directly involved in the 9/11 attack.

9. Right, but I mean did they care about the consequences when it
inevitably became clear to everyone ELSE that it was a big pack of lies.

Obviously the propaganda campaign, in the immediate, short run, was a huge success.

Almost a test of "who among us likes to use their brain"? I guess the answer is, 30 percent.

10. They did, people did, now the tide gradually turns a little
Americans, as a group, did fall for it. The real question is how long will they continue to fall for it.

They figured it was an absolute lock they'd turn up a few bunkers full of 80s era mustard gas rounds--more than enough to justify their WMD claims. Otherwise, why go to the trouble and embarrassment of the lengthy ISG process, and the release of those two damning reports? It was pretty clear to me that both Bush and Cheney really believed they'd find something--anything--that would make their WMD case for them. What's surprising is that they didn't plant a few truckfuls of 55-gallon drums with big skull-and-crossbones painted on them, and "DANGER, POISON" written in both English and Arabic, just in case anybody missed the point. The Iranian news service may actually have beaten them to the punch by reporting in 2003-04 that they were up to exactly that.

Edited on Sun Aug-07-05 01:22 PM by havocmom
and leave them in harms way so they had to fight, thereby assuring huge profits for junta private contracting cronies.

By the time enough American rubbed the bullshit outta their eyes, our troops were already kidnapped and held for ongoing ransom payments.

Meanwhile, more and more computers are in place to 'count' the programed votes in upcoming elections. Status Quo assured unless we kick the computers out of voting booths and kick Halliburton & subsideraries out of the role of keeping our hostage troops fed and supplied.

edit to correct ommission of a word

As long as they could fool 51%, that's all that mattered to them.

"You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time."

Abraham Lincoln, (attributed)
16th president of US (1809 - 1865)
