Poll question: POLL: Do a once a month "Day of Mourning" stay home strike to protest war?
General strikes have been extremely effective in Europe, but are virtually unknown here.

If we did a one day a month stay home strike until the troops are withdrawn from Iraq and/or impeachment proceedings begin for Bush, it would have several advantages:

Even if the media ignored it, people would see it at the empty desks around them.

If done like the police "blue flu," you wouldn't necessarily have to tell people you are doing it, which could make it seem bigger than it is, or business and bushies paranoid about how widespread active opposition is.

It would have an economic impact not just on your employer, but all the crap you don't buy as a consequence of not going to work that day.

If done once a month, it would have a chance to grow in popularity and participants, and create concern among Bushies about how big it will get.

Comments appreciated.

1. put a Black Wreath on your door... and this is my knew Idea.. original

so give me a little credit..

a loop Black Ribbon like the AID's and Breast Cancer Ribbons.., subtle, respectful and profound.. with a little square blue field with stars on one end

lets start a DU non-Profit project, a fund for widows and orphans.. and continue to shame the B*stards constantly.. we would be supporting the casualties of war the Widows, that should get some press.

I am an autistic savant and these ideas flow thru me constantly, i want to make my mark on this war.. i cant do the paper work to sell anything.. as a result i have made Millions for others who have taken my ideas, but i never get a cent or any credit..

Lets do this...!!! shame them every time they go into a liquor store, a grocery store, a drug store.. there are the little black ribbons.
you cant get away from the dead, ever

9. Moratoriums
Edited on Sun Aug-07-05 05:17 PM by rlev1223
Two of the most effeictive days of protest during the Vietnam war were "moratorium" days -- essentially general strikes led by students. October and Nov of 1969, i believe.

so many in this country are home anyway BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO JOBS TO GO TO!!!!!! Unless you want to make an impression on those who count on McMuffins for breakfast and Big Macs for lunch, it's a waste of time.

11. if people could afford it...
they should refuse to go to work whenever Bush is not "at work"... Camp David trips, Crawford trips, two hours everyday to work out. You know, he's the example of what "hard work" is all about.

12. there are serious logistical problems
1. job insecurity in wage laborers & part-time workers
2. the general strike smackdown (assassinations/imprisonments) in the 60's/70's set a precedent that they'll hurt people to stop them
3. extremely high unemployment (vastly understated by the govt.)

Maybe boycotts would do better.

14. I love the idea...
I think this is the only way to crash the system before too many more people get killed in *'s war with Iraq.

In order to get more people to participate, I'd suggest starting out with a smaller time increment... like a strike that last for an hour or two on a certain day. Maybe, just leave it to people to come up with their own time frame that works for them.
