They will have to run Thune for the House just to save Janklow's House seat, meaning some backbencher will be thrown out to the wolves to run against Daschle.

I've heard that the only position Thune's looking for is Senate. Do you think they'd sacrifice the House seat so that Thune could run against Daschle?

With the coup in Texas almost complete they may figure that control of the House is safe until the end of the decade and be willing to risk the SD House seat. The Senate could change hands sooner than the House, so I suppose it is a possibility.

there is only so much you can ask of voters.

If Bush wins 60% - 40 %, then you are asking 17 % of Bush voters to vote for Daschle too. That may be doable, but if Bush wins SD 65-35, then you are asking 23 % of Bush voters to vote for Daschle too. And that's just for a 50-50 victory.
