Sources close to the former president say Rove was fired from the 1992 Bush presidential campaign after he planted a negative story with columnist Robert Novak about dissatisfaction with campaign fundraising chief and Bush loyalist Robert Mosbacher Jr. It was smoked out, and he was summarily ousted.

Circumstantial, but his history with Sr. seals it for me. He is THE suspect. I also think Ari might have had an attack of conscience and was asked to confirm the leak by one or more reporters and QUIT. Since it's been noted that the outing by Novak and Ari's quitting happened on the same day - makes you wonder. Cover stories can always be made up for an exit. My guess is Ari said goodbye the day he announced his departure and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if it was directly tied to this incident.

He could have kept it from Bush for one reason: plausible deniability. In essence, that means Bush knew in general terms, but wasn't told who told who exactly what so he could truthfully deny knowledge. But with this crowd - I would bet Bush knew.
