What if a dirty bomb hit near you? Do you have a plan?
Just out of curiousity, do you have a plan if you were forced to leave your home? I am concerned about those that live in heavily populated areas that could be a terror target. What would you do?

If I lived, I'd move someplace else until the radiation faded away. You know, the next 30K years or so.

9. The half life of Pu235 is 85 years....
And that's refined to the point of being used in Cassini and other Spacecraft...

The chances of others getting enough shit to be a terrorist bomb are pretty slim.

It would be more efficient to build a nuke.

Terror! Be afraid!

4. If there is a dirty bomb near you, stay indoors for crying out loud!
Going outside and travelling around through it would be the worst thing you could do.

And don't bother taking the iodine tablets unless there's a release of radioactive steam -- it doesn't help with anything else.

13. So where can you buy these over the counter? Also, I'm hypo-
thyroid. Won't that affect my thyroid more so then those with a normal thyroid? I know those that are hyperthyroid have the Iodine and that kills their thyroid and they have to take synthroid (just like I do). So what does the Iodine do? I like your symbol. I just read this and I sound 10 years old (sorry).

Hehehe... I'm hypoglycemic (not really, and not sure on the spelling there either). It was just my guess as to how your "subject" finished up in the "message body".

What would I do if I survived a messy bomb? Hmmm... I'd probably do my best to make an opportunity of it. Sell bottled water for ridiculous prices, shoeboxes full of crap called "EMERGENCY MESSY BOMB SURVIVAL KIT": a Snicker bar, a couple of band aids, dental floss, paper clips, anything that I can find on my bedroom floor. Hopefully, catch up with the truck to raid, loot and liberate merchandise being held hostage by retailers.

The usual...

16. I believe that so-called 'dirty bombs' are much like fallout
...But in a much smaller area.

With fallout from a nuclear blast, it's unlikely to affect you unless you physically come in contact with it. A smarter person than me can provide more details, but particles of uranium, for example, only emit certain types of radiation (Gamma? Alpha? Beta? don't remember...) -- mostly stuff that is blocked by building materials. Nuclear blasts themselves can emit much worse radiation -- stuff that can go through concrete, etc...but the subsequent fallout only emits radiation that is harmful in very close contact.

I've read that you can allow all the solid particles to precipitate out of a fallout-contaminated container of water and safely pull water off of the top, for example.

And keep in mind, finally, that most dirty bombs are only going to affect a fairly small area -- probably measured in blocks, not square miles (unless conditions are just right -- or rather, just 'wrong'...).

23. Do nothing! The truth is a "dirty bomb" will be extremal localized
any biological agent would be destroyed in the explosion and radiation would only affect a small localized area. It's bull shit and nothing to worry about at all. I'm a former NBC "Nuclear, Biological and Chemical" officer not WMDs a name change to scare you. A dirty bomb would be less effective than a explosive one.

something like...trot away to a safe distance till the cleanup boys do their thing. It could take hours or days and it might be prudent to have a contingency plan on hand. Same goes for earthquakes, floods, and forest fires.

your gonna need to stay pretty close by to get decontaminated if it is a strong one. but for the most part this is hyped nonsense.

latest national geographic (the one about oil and alternatives) has a great article about 60 yrs with the nuclear bomb. it shows the size, power, and danger of atomic, hydrogen, and "dirty bomb." for the most part it's nothing to worry about.

75. I disagree a bit.
It is a matter of how muck radioactive material you can manage to collect and deliver without being detected. The weather would contribute to your success or failure also. A nice windy day and nature will help you in your efforts. Rain would hamper you.
I think the point of a dirty bomb is more area denial rather than immediate death. What if you could make an area dangerous to be in? It could be anything from the mall in D.C. to Disneyland. Would that not be a victory for those that would do us harm?

I guess I am getting paranoid in my old age............

34. A Dirty Bomb Is Primarily An Economic Weapon
Human radiologic effects can be minimized with proper decontamination.

However, if set off in a high dollar urban area, the real estate losses could be massive, since clean up (to safe levels) would be extremely difficult, if not impossible.

35. Exactly. A dirty bomb mostly just renders real estate useless.
If a dirty bomb went off a couple blocks from your house, you'd have to stay home, call your insurance company, and then get a good night's sleep in your own bed.

In the morning, you'd need to get on the subway and find a nice hotel a couple miles away (and maybe dispose of your clothing).

Your home, your car, and everything in it might be rendered un-usable. I don't know if you can put contaminated clothing in a washing machine and be able to wear them again.

The real threat will be from the mass-panic as people over-react in various ways. Including poisoning themselves unnecessarily with iodine pills.

I'm going to stay inside. Turn on the news.

If I'm out and about (and within the dispersal zone) I'm going to go home, remove clothing, take a shower, save my clothing for testing and then see a doctor. I'm also going to turn on the news.

If I'm at the actual blast (ground zero) that causes the dispersal, be sure and party over my grave....or at least pretend I've never looked better while visiting me in the burn unit and or ICU of the hospital.

The biggest thing I'm not going to do is worry about it.

59. Having lived in Boston, NY and DC....
and now living near a sentimental target if not a strategic one, I can't get all wrapped around the axle on this. I guess I'm a fatalist but what happens happens.

60. The dirty bomb of the local nuclear plant
Doon the coast from 'ere is a nuclear plant, Dounreay. It has been
cited for numerous accidents, and several hundred thousand particles
of nuclear fuel are washing in a plume towards where i live. To shop,
i pass this "dirty bomb" and its security apparatus, the paranoia of
attack and the looks of secrecy. There are cancer clusters, that remain
unearthed, nuclear workers are in more danger "in" the plant than
civilians are outside of it (being that the "dirty bomb" is the largest
local employer" next to tourism (not to mention the affects it would
have on that if they knew the extent of the nuclear dumping and the
dangers of the coastline on tourist guides)

Well, so your question makes me think, well, i *DO* live near a
big dirty bomb explosion, and i expect to perhaps die early from my
choice of "cheaper" housing near a nuclear accident masquaerading as
a plant. I'm sure flats are cheaper in chernbyl these days.

So my plan is to accept the fact of the dirty bomb and get on with it.

Then again, it keeps away the property developers as well, so there
is a sorta nice knockon effect. In that regard, dirty bombs are kinda
a blessing in disguise to bird populations and stuff, sorta like
how chernobyl is more biodiverse as a human-depopulated area.

So my dead remains, may they rot in biodiversity. :-)

61. yes.
first I'll pick my brother and all his good friends up from school in a beat-up pick-up truck. from there we'll dodge RPG fire and head to a sporting-goods store and stock up on rifles, toilet-paper, wheaties, bullets, lanterns, flashlights and batteries. .. then we head for the mountains and hide out. from our mountain outpost we'll ambush as many arabs, russians and nicaraguans as possible. defending america from the foreign horde that seeks our destruction - aided by some beautiful women that can we use to repopulate new america with pure-american blood.

it won't be easy, but we're going to be all out of options. we will fight, so that this nation shall not perish from this earth.

what were we talking about again?

81. Duck and Cover?
Sorry, just kidding.

I will go to the hospital I work at and will help any way I can until I die if that is what is to be.

I live in Seattle. We are very high on the list of possible targets especially if it comes from North Korea. But, we live in the shadow of a beautiful but dangerous mountain. It makes one very pragmatic.
