16 Democrats call on Bush to meet mother of fallen soldier
http://rawstory.com/news/2005/16_Democrats_call_on_Bush_to_meet_mother_of_fallen_soldi_0809.html

Dear Mr. President:

We write to respectfully urge you to meet with Cindy Sheehan and other relatives of fallen soldiers who request a meeting to discuss their deep concerns about the war in Iraq. We also request that you help ensure that Ms. Sheehan and her colleagues are not arrested as long as they continue to wait for a meeting with you at their location in the peaceable and legal manner that they have maintained thus far.

Since the loss of her son, Ms. Sheehan and other families have been committed to helping family members of other soldiers who have been lost in Iraq. Ms. Sheehan, in fact, founded Gold Star Families for Peace, a support organization for families of fallen soldiers. For several days now, she has been waiting outside your ranch, hoping to meet with you about the loss of her son and the failure to discover weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Ms. Sheehan has indicated that she is planning to continue her vigil for the entirety of your vacation at your Crawford complex if necessary.

Given the recent tragic loss of American lives in Iraq, and the many deaths and injuries American troops have sustained since the beginning of the war, we hope that you can appreciate why the family members believe it so important that they exercise their rights as citizens to petition their government. We believe it would send an unfortunate message to other relatives and soldiers if grieving parents were arrested while exercising their constitutional rights.

Thank you very much for you assistance with this matter. We hope that you will be able to make time to meet with Ms. Sheehan and her colleagues and also ensure they are treated fairly while awaiting this important appointment.

Sincerely,

Reps. John Conyers; George Miller; Maxine Waters; Corrine Brown; Dennis Kucinich; Carolyn Maloney; Jim McDermott; Jim McGovern; Barbara Lee; Zoe Lofgren; Peter Oberstar; John Lewis; Bernie Sanders; Bob Filner; Micheal Honda; Raul Grijalva

3. We would love to meet with every family member of every soldier who has
died in Iraq.

The president, however, is working hard to keep American strong, protect us from those countries and individuals who would do us harm, and to protect your tax dollars. If he meets with one mother, he'll have to meet with all of them. And then you'll find people who want to talk with the president about their schools, their commutes, the rising cost of gas and any other topic that comes to mind.

Taking this much time from his schedule ensures that we cannot protect ourselves from another September 11, 2001 where over 3,000 Americans were killed.

--Scotty McClellan, press secretary

8. Is that a McClellan quote, or a parody? I'm really asking. Did he really
say that...that it might lead to the president having to talk to mothers about "their schools, their commutes, the rising cost of gas..."???? --and that partying at the ranch (ahem, protecting us from another 9/11) leaves no time in his schedule for these ridiculous concerns from peons?

And he's "working hard" to "protect your tax dollars"? McClellan said that? --he's "working hard" to "protect your tax dollars" --during his month-long vacation at the ranch?

Real? Parody? Do tell.

7. I don't agree with that move.
The message will be diminished if it's made to look like a Democratic Party exercise.

Frankly, I wish they hadn't written the letter.

10. I had the initial reaction of...
"Oh geez, let's not use this as a political scoring point.", but then I looked at the names. If these men and women feel compelled to chastize our Commander in Thief and support Cindy than they should be allowed to do so in an official capacity. It's not like it came from the DLC. More power to them! Figuratively and literally.

9. Mmmmmm, most of those patriots are familiar.
Why is it that we see the same names over and over again, hmmmm? Sadly, our Commander in Thief will blithely ignore our legislative representatives as much as he ignores the women whose sons he murdered.

12. Geez, sit on your hands, and people bitch
Sign a letter in support of Cindy Sheehan and people still bitch. This is positive, this is Democrats standing up for the little people whom everyone claims to stand up for. This is the very essence of peacefully petitioning the government for redress of a grievance. Would you prefer to see armed citizens storming the Crawford bunker? Me neither.

This is an easy one that people can understand. It also encapsulates so many shortcomings of the corrupt Bush administration, shortcomings that we've been hollering about for over five years.
