What One Mom has to Say to Bush

“That lying bastard, George Bush, is taking a five-week vacation in time of war,” Cindy Sheehan told 200 cheering members of Veterans For Peace at their annual convention in Dallas last Friday evening. She then announced she would go to Bush’s vacation home in nearby Crawford, Texas and camp out until he “tells me why my son died in Iraq. I’ve got the whole month of August off, and so does he.”

Sheehan left the VFP meeting on Saturday morning and is now in Crawford with a couple dozen veterans and local peace activists, waiting for Bush to talk with her. She said in Dallas that if he sends anyone else to see her, as happened when national security adviser Steve Hadley and deputy White House chief of staff Joe Hagin did later that day, she would demand that “You get that maniac out here to talk with me in person.”

She told the audience of veterans from World War Two to today’s war in Iraq, that the two main things she plans to tell the man she holds responsible for son Casey’s death are “Quit saying that U.S. troops died for a noble cause in Iraq, unless you say, ‘well, except for Casey Sheehan.’ Don’t you dare spill any more blood in Casey’s name. You do not have permission to use my son’s name.”

“And the other thing I want him to tell me is ‘just what was the noble cause Casey died for?’ Was it freedom and democracy? Bullshit! He died for oil. He died to make your friends richer. He died to expand American imperialism in the Middle East. We’re not freer here, thanks to your PATRIOT Act. Iraq is not free. You get America out of Iraq and Israel out of Palestine and you’ll stop the terrorism,” she exclaimed.

“There, I used the ‘I’ word – imperialism,” the 48 year-old mother quipped. “And now I’m going to use another ‘I’ word – impeachment – because we cannot have these people pardoned. They need to be tried on war crimes and go to jail.”

Sure, your son died for the greater enrichment of George W. Bush and his financial backers, but don't say anything inflammatory, because two unknown people in an unknown place will not like it, or so says another unknown person in an unknown place. So please just stuff your anger or your righteous indignation, tamp it down good, because its expression will be not be understood by people who don't understand how a mother who has lost her son could ever be upset about it.

If people can't deal with, or do not have the grace to forgive the rage of a woman who had a huge part of her life ripped from her for the lies and greed of a few hundred folks, then those folks are not only themselves impolite--they are lousy, shitty Americans and need a good long sit-down with themselves and their conscience and open themselves to what it truly means to be an American.

Her incendiary language and appearances on Air America, etc. make it easier for the right wing radio monopoloy to depict her as a political opportunist and toadie of lefties. It's showing up on boards now how she initially praised President Bush's response to her son's death. True or not, a lot of folks don't trust her turn.

She's allowed to be angry and bitter at the president. That's her right. But she loses folks by calling him a 'lying bastard' even if that is true. A lot of folks that might be convinced tune out stuff like that.

I think the camp-out is great. She'll win over others by discussing her hurt, not the fact that Bush is a liar. Go ahead and say he lied to the US people, because he did. But calling him a "lying bastard" turns off a lot of folks.

9. Give these wounded vets about 5 years and some hindsight

and we'll hear GWB called worse than a bastard. Wait until someone who has lost eyes, arms, legs or had a "depleted uranium" baby die, and once Georgie boy has tucked his tail and run like the yellow dog he is. Then see what these wounded vets say. Wait til a few more Guards and Reserve soldiers lose their homes and businesses or are called back for tour 3, 4 or 5. Then see how noble a cause they think they fought for.
