State government missing 30,000 vehicles

By David M. Drucker, Sacramento Bureau
LA Daily News

SACRAMENTO - California's fleet of state-owned vehicles swelled to 70,000 last year, but officials in an aggressive new asset-management push have so far been able to pinpoint only about 40,000.

The effort by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's State and Consumer Services Agency which began its review when he took office marks a first for the state but is highlighting what administration officials say have been years of haphazard and inefficient management by both Democratic and Republican governors.

2. I know CA is the biggest state (by pop) and all, but 30K seems impossible!
Perhaps they were sold as state surplus and not recorded?

I mean, most state jobs require people to drive their own cars. I have a friend who works at the State Building in downtown San Diego, and she says their department has only 1 car. I've seen the parking lot. Even if every department in the building had 1 car, that would still only be like 20 cars, and that is San Diego, the second most populous city in the state!!

It is a puzzle inside a mystery wrapped in an enigma.

No wonder they have to cram 35 students to a class in high schools!

6. And how many employees are missing?
heck, if the state can misplace vehicles it might be assumed the can misplace people, too. Just how many ghost employees does the great state of California have? Should we be counting noses?

Lots of state vehicle down at the donut shop every morning, all morning...I'm just saying...
