11. That's in Detroit or Dearborn (or somewhere)
That wouldn't be near Ann Arbor--but yes, that thing seems to blow up regularly.

9. They've had plenty of chances to do that
The BP Refinery in Texas City has gone ka-boom a lot lately. They won't spin it as terrorists because then they'd have to admit that the plants aren't properly protected.

20. WMDs
I noticed that as well, they've been talking that up for a few days now as best I remember, and this morning on Contains No News their pentagon correspondent was nearly breathless in reporting that they'd intercepted "sophisticated"( her term) explosive devices coming across the border from Iran into Iraq.I guess since they couldn't find the big WMDs to justify the misadventure in Iraq they'll settle for little ones to justify the next one in Iran. I guess we can only hope that the american body politic won't fall for that dodge again.Besides that I don't know where they'd get the troops to open a second front against a much stouter opponent than the Iraqis.

but, reality has never been a factor with these ass hats - as I recall, our Servicemen and women were supposed to have been welcomed into Iraq with rose strewn streets and deliriously happy Iraqis - uh huh, right.

46. Hmm... there seem to be quite a lot of "kabooms" lately...
W/ Bushco I tend to think the opposite. IMO they're more likely to cover up or brush off as "accidents" as many US terrorist events as they can. If they admitted that the terrorists are able to and actively are bombing places in this country it would very likely be the death toll of the Bush regime, the PNAC agenda and many if not all neo-cons for a very long time since for all the talk Americans still would not be all that much safer (like many here don't already know this).

It's truly sad that we can't trust our government to do the right thing, to protect us, to protect our civil liberties, etc. I deeply love my country and believe in her amazing potential to be a shining example of Freedom and Democracy but I fear and distrust the government currently in charge more then I ever have... or should.

::Sigh:: I just hope all employees and locals (human and animal alike) are safe from all the toxic fumes, etc.

24. Eccch--company "blends fuel, recycles solvents", evacuations taking place
Local 4 is reporting that the explosion started at the EQ Resource Recovery, Inc. (EQRR). The company blends fuel and recycles solvent, according to its Web site.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Department is cautioning that this is a hazardous materials situation. Residents within a half mile of the plant are being asked to voluntarily evacuate from their homes.

Remaining residents in the area are being told to close doors and windows in their homes. Officials are warning everyone to stay away from the area.

The sheriff's department is assisting with evacuations and Romulus High School has been opened to accept anyone in the area who is evacuated. Hazmat crews are at the scene.

28. Reminds me of a train accident I was near
Knock on the door @ 4 am to a derailed train outside my house, burning. "we don't think it's toxic but it might explode so you have to leave now no don't take time to get the dog just go NOW". drive to friends house 5 miles upwind to find that area being evacuated too. Drive to next town 10 miles away to drink coffee. Sirens a few hrs later bringing firefighters to ER after the train exploded when putting out fire. Did you know burning sulfur mixed with water turns into balls of sulfuric acid? Neither did the train people who told the fire fighters to go dump water on it. The fire crew pulled back, were told by the train people "hmm, didn't expect that. Well, it'll be safe now so go back to your job." Huh uh said the fire crew. Hazmat people had to come in and comb the local fields for balls of sulfuric acid stuff for the next wk. Nasty stuff.

Hope all goes ok there.

25. Yes, I am here!
If I DO pass out it will probably be from libations and not toxic fumes...but all kidding aside I shut my windows and cranked up the air after I read about this and turned on the local news.

Again--where is my duct tape and plastic sheeting??? (kidding totally)

I am sure this is my over active imagination about fumes..I am also the type that thinks they have every disease known to man kind after I read about it for a brief period of time, so this is par for the course for yours truly.

Great now they are talking about some pulmonary symptons--(of course I think I may have them) you just know I will be needlessly clogging an ER room somewhere at some point tonight ;)

35. Your thermostat should have a switch
for recirculated air or fresh outside air. Until you've got better info about what's in your air, if you can you should recirculate your air.

37. NEWS: Fire rages at a chemical plant in suburban Detroit
ROMULUS -- A fire raged at a suburban Detroit chemical plant Tuesday, sending plumes of black smoke high into the night sky and forcing police to evacuate homes in a half-mile radius.

Authorities said no injuries were reported, and no one was inside the plant when the fire started.

Witnesses described a series of loud explosions that shook the ground and shot flames and smoke into the air.

Romulus Police Chief Charles Kirby said it was unclear what hazardous materials might be involved in the fire, but he urged residents within the half-mile radius to evacuate because materials in the smoke could pose a danger to their health.

45. PHOTO, info, here

ROMULUS -- A chemical plant fire raged out of control early this morning, setting off a series of explosions and filling the nighttime sky with flames and heavy billowing smoke.

Romulus Public Safety Director Charles Kirby said there were no injuries in the fire and explosions that began about 9:15 p.m.

He said apparently there was no one in the plant when the blaze began at EQ Resource Recovery Inc., an environmental services company that treats hazardous and industrial waste.

Nearby businesses were evacuated by police as the blaze leapt from tank to tank at the complex at 36345 Van Born, which is just north of the Detroit Metro Airport.
