“You get that maniac out here to talk with me in person.”..Cindy Sheehan
http://www.counterpunch.org/ferner08092005.html

She told the audience of veterans from World War Two to today’s war in Iraq, that the two main things she plans to tell the man she holds responsible for son Casey’s death are “Quit saying that U.S. troops died for a noble cause in Iraq, unless you say, ‘well, except for Casey Sheehan.’ Don’t you dare spill any more blood in Casey’s name. You do not have permission to use my son’s name.”

“And the other thing I want him to tell me is ‘just what was the noble cause Casey died for?’ Was it freedom and democracy? Bullshit! He died for oil. He died to make your friends richer. He died to expand American imperialism in the Middle East. We’re not freer here, thanks to your PATRIOT Act. Iraq is not free. You get America out of Iraq and Israel out of Palestine and you’ll stop the terrorism,” she exclaimed.

“There, I used the ‘I’ word – imperialism,” the 48 year-old mother quipped. “And now I’m going to use another ‘I’ word – impeachment – because we cannot have these people pardoned. They need to be tried on war crimes and go to jail.”

As the veterans in Dallas rose to their feet, Sheehan said defiantly, “My son was killed in 2004. I am not paying my taxes for 2004. You killed my son, George Bush, and I don’t owe you a penny...you give my son back and I’ll pay my taxes. Come after me (for back taxes) and we’ll put this war on trial.”

I can almost see why the Coward-in-Chief doesn't want to meet with her alone! And he thought carpet diving for a pretzel was tough? He thought a Segway was tough? He thought riding a bicycle was tough? Ha!

My money's on Cindy. KO in the first round.

46. Definitely a KO in the first round.
She's already scored a TKO without Junior even showing up.

No, he'll never meet with her. He doesn't dare meet with her. He doesn't handle disagreement well (he thinks it's all defiance and goes berserk) and he certainly can't handle a strong woman. His mama cows him and his wife isn't exactly the poster girl for strength. As for his kids.... Yeah, right. :eyes:

64. The rest of what she said made me cry............
As the veterans in Dallas rose to their feet, Sheehan said
defiantly, "My son was killed in 2004. I am not paying my taxes for
2004. You killed my son, George Bush, and I don't owe you a
penny...you give my son back and I'll pay my taxes. Come after me
(for back taxes) and we'll put this war on trial."

The co-founder of Gold Star Mothers for Peace objected to hearing
that her son was among the soldiers lost in Iraq. "He's not lost,"
she said tearfully. "He's dead. He became an angel while I was
sleeping."

She railed against the notion expressed by officials in the Bush
administration that bringing the troops home now would dishonor the
sacrifice of those who have died. "By sending honorable people to
die, they so dishonor themselves. They say we must complete our
mission...but why would I want one more mother to go through what I
have, just because my son is dead?"

16. Amazing. But Cindy's already met with Bush
and that's one of the creepiest stories I've seen - originally posted here: http://www.lewisnews.com/article.asp?ID=105971 I'm posting a quote only in case some may have missed it:

Instead of a kind gesture or a warm handshake, Sheehan said she immediately got a taste of Bush arrogance when he entered the room and "in a condescending tone and with a disgusting loud Texas accent," said: "Who we’all honorin’ here today?"

"His mouth kept moving, but there was nothing in his eyes or anything else about him that showed me he really cared or had any real compassion at all. This is a human being totally disconnected from humanity and reality. His eyes were empty, hollow shells and he was acting like I should be proud to just be in his presence when it was my son who died for his illegal war! It was one of the most disgusting experiences I ever had and it took me almost a year to even talk about it," said Sheehan in a telephone conversation from Washington D.C. where she was attending a July 4th anti-war rally.

Sheehan said the June 2004 private meeting with the President went from bad to worse to a nightmare when Bush acted like he didn’t even want to know her name. She said Bush kept referring to her as ‘Ma’ or ‘Mom’ while he "put on a phony act," saying things like ‘Mom, I can’t even imagine losing a loved one, a mother or a father or a sister or a brother.’
(snip)

"My daughter said to him directly ‘I wish I could bring my loved one back’ and he said something like ‘so do we.’ Later she told me that after he made his remark he gave her one of the filthiest looks she had ever had gotten in her life.

"I just couldn’t believe this was happening. It was so surreal and bizarre. Later I met with some of the other 15or 16 families who were at the White House the same day and, sure enough, they all felt the same way I did.

"It’s interesting that they put us each in separate rooms. I heard this was done to prevent any type of group outburst and since it’s easier to control a situation when people are separated. Looking back, all I can say is that the meeting with Bush was one of the most disgusting experiences in my life.

So what I'm wondering about is: first, is anyone in a position to confirm these quotes with Cindy, to make sure whoever reported it didn't juice it up? I've only ever been quoted by a reporter once, and one of the two sentences I had said was severely mangled. And this is Greg Szymanski we're talking about here.

Secondly, with the press Cindy is getting (not enough, but some at least), shouldn't this story be **blasted out**?

And finally, what does Cindy expect from another meeting? I mean no harm in saying it, mind. I'm only wondering if she really wants to meet with * again, and what her expectations are. Because perhaps it doesn't matter is * comes out to meet her or not - what matters is being there in numbers. And spreading this story far and wide.

She is holding up with exceptional grace. I would not have the strength to do what she has done.

She is certainly tired, hot, hurting and frustrated. I appreciate what she is feeling but I would not push the tax thing. I think that she is getting her message out very well without it.

"high road" meant all the things she is doing. She should be somewhat careful about how she handles herself. She occupies a strong position now. A few careless comments that aren't constructive or focused could have a bad effect.

81. I guess I'm just trying to put myself in her position
I'm convinced she's very genuine and not doing this to make a political statement or achieve favorable spin. Trying to put himself in her position, if I had lost a son in Iraq, I wouldn't care how I came off in the media. I wouldn't be doing it so that Bush opponents would feel the strongest, most politically convincing message would be sent. I would be doing it because of my own personal hell in having lost my son and because of my direct accusation against Bush as the idiot and murderer who had sent my son to die. If I were Cindy, I would be behaving as if there were nothing they could do to me anymore that would compare to the taking of my son's life, and I wouldn't care about what effect it might have on politics on either side.

result of this courageous woman's tragedy. She speaks for all of us.

45. I was trying to find the words to describe Cindy's truth: fire? thunder?
sweet rain? There is something elemental about the way she speaks. It has the truth and purity of nature in it.

My mind turned to the Sword of Damocles, which I think of a something that "cuts to the truth," but I realized that I had no idea what the Sword of Damocles really was, so I looked it up.

-----

"Damocles, in classical mythology, courtier at the court of Dionysius I. He so persistently praised the power and happiness of Dionysius that the tyrant, in order to show the precariousness of rank and power, gave a banquet and had a sword suspended above the head of Damocles by a single hair. Hence the expression “the sword of Damocles” to mean an ever-present peril."

http://www.bartleby.com/65/da/Damocles.html

-----

"Damocles it seems was an excessively flattering courtier in the court of Dionysius II of Syracuse, a 4th Century BC tyrant of Syracuse, Italy. He effused that, as a great man of power and authority, Dionysius was truly fortunate. Dionysius offered to switch places with him for a day, so he could taste first hand that fortune. In the evening a banquet was held, where Damocles very much enjoyed being waited upon like a king. Only at the end of the meal did he look up and notice a sharpened sword hanging by a single piece of horsehair directly above the throne. Immediately, he lost all taste for the fine foods and beautiful boys and asked leave of the tyrant, saying he no longer wanted to be so fortunate.

"The Sword of Damocles is a frequently used allusion to this tale, epitomizing the insecurity of those with great power due to the possibility of that power being taken away suddenly, or, more generally, any feeling of impending doom."

Here is another version:
http://ancienthistory.about.com/od/ciceroworkslatin/f/DamoclesSword.htm

-----

So the Sword of Damocles is indeed something like the Sword of Truth. It means that power and riches can be wiped away in a second. It also means that power and riches that are gained by violence are UNJUST. Dionysius obtained them and held onto them through war, killing and oppression--he was a "tyrant." But this tyrant seems to have had a bit of native wisdom (being a Greek!) and could see how perilous it all was, and grew impatient with the flattery part of it. Thus, his lesson to his courtier that his life hangs by a thread. He could see, better than the courtier, how he came by it all, and how insecure his power was, since it was based on tyranny not on goodness and justice or any inherent virtue.

Cindy Sheehan is George Bush's Sword of Damocles--the truth hanging over his life, that power obtained by bloodshed and oppression is empty. It means nothing. It is not real power. It lacks the security that comes from real virtue.

Many have perceived the emptiness in Bush. Cindy certainly seems to have perceived it in her first meeting with him. The empty eyes, the oblivious manner, and the hateful look at being in the least challenged. He is surrounded by the most aggressive and elaborate physical security ever devised to protect a monarch, yet he feels no security in who he is. He has nothing inside--no genuineness--to give to others. He lacks even the tyrant Dionysius' perception of the fleeting nature of riches and power in the face of his own death.

And here comes Cindy who has faced death as perhaps only a mother can face it, in the loss of her child. There is nothing worse they can do to her. She would have gladly given her own life that her child could live. A She-Bear. A Lioness. A truly noble being. And when she speaks the truth, it roars.

73. Stirring, eloquent words, Peace Patriot.
Send them to buzzflash, send them to The New York Times, but most especially send them to Cindy Sheehan.

Truly, there is nothing worse they can do to her than to take the life of her loving son. Ms. Sheehan is doing the only thing she can do now, which is trying to spare other families the same fate.

47. And now Cindy's sick
with a sore throat and a fever. Will that stop her? Not a chance.

This is some weird weather we're having in Texas this week. Thunderstorm after thunderstorm. I heard Crawford got 3.5" of rain and that Camp Casey is soaked. It's almost as if the living conditions there are being made worse in order to showcase their determination. We know nothing will stop them and now the world will know it, too. :applause:

59. When will we all arise and say Ya Basta! Solidarity Rallies All 'Round
"To live in this process is absolutely not to be able to notice it - please try to believe me - unless one has a much greater degree of political awareness, acuity, than most of us had ever had occasion to develop.  Each step was so small, so inconsequential, so well explained or, on occasion, "regretted," that, unless one were detached from the whole process from the beginning, unless one understood what the whole thing was in principle, what all these "little measures" that no "patriotic German" could resent must some day lead to, one no more saw it developing from day to day than a farmer in his field sees the corn growing.  One day it is over his head.

He needs to be held accountable for his actions. She has paid an enormous price and has earned the right to ask the hard questions. She deserves to be treated with respect and she deserves real answers.

He is accountable to Cindy Sheehan. He is accountable to every mother that has lost a child in this conflict. He is accountable to the American people. It is time for him to start acting like it.

I think that she should send him as white feather for being too much of a coward to take responsibility for his own actions.

He would certainly meet with a defense contractor or an oil company executive.

74. Memories of Another War
This whole Iraq debacle reminds me of another war - the War of 1812. The real reason why the U.S. declared war on Britain was because the U.S. wanted to takeover Canada. They said "To take Canada, all we need to do is march."

However, to justify the war to the public, President Madison emphasized that it was about stopping Britain from supposedly aiding Indians upon attacks on the U.S.
