Is it just me, or is "The Western White House" unbelievably arrogant?
I remember this pissing me off back in 2001 when he went on his first month-long vacation and hearing about how he named the pig farm "The Western White House". They even designed an official seal for it, just like what you see in the press room at the real White House.

Maybe I'm just anal, I don't know. But to this day I am annoyed by this supposition that Bush's circle of absolute power follows him wherever he goes. Reminds me of the clever names they used for Hitler's mansions all over Germany.

1. Yes, considering that the White House
is a publicly owned building and in theory "the people" have access to it.

2. It goes back to Nixon at least.

San Clemente was the 'Western White House' back then.

I can't remember if they called FDR's retreat at Warm Springs, GA a 'White House' or not. I would not be surprised.

Nothing to really get worked up about, considering everything else going on.

3. it's not just you
the White House is (well, used to be) owned by the American people ... his "ranch" (cough, snicker) is his own private residence and as such, it is somewhat arrogant to refer to it as "The Western White House" ... not a big deal, really, but I'm sure a big deal would have been made of it if Kerry had won and referred to his house in Boston as "The New England White House" or if Clinton had gone to spend 5 weeks at a time at "The Southern White House"

5. He goes there to get away from the people
from the people's representatives in Congress, from the Supreme Court and from the press. Being on vacation means being unaccessible, unavailable for unwanted questions and observation. He doesn't like us. He wants to avoid us. He wants to hob-nob with the rich and famous only. As if he had anything to do with us unwashed folks in D.C., but apparently the distance between us and him is not great enough in the White House . . . . In Crawford, he has total control over who comes and goes and what he has to do. That's why he goes to the Western White House.
