13. It's not even a choice

The question implies that you have a choice, and that if you give up privacy you gain security. Now, I'll always vote for privacy myself, but I won't fault someone who would choose security. **If** there really was such a choice to be made.

But the choice is false. You give up privacy (actually, civil liberties - they're not limited to privacy) and do you feel safer? Are you safer? What are the indicators? We know that no-one has yet been successfully prosecuted for terrorism under the P.A.T.R.I.O.T. act. Have any operations been foiled? WHite House website still brags about the Lackawanna Six, but they were most likely framed. There are no statistics and no tangible indicators of increased security.

I think it boils down to who you'd dather be secure from: the terrorists or the state. The state has a monopoly on legal use of force, and civil liberties are the only means of protection that citizens have. Give up civil liberties, and you're more likely to suffer oppresion **by** the state.

Give up civil liberties, and you're giving up security at the same time. The two are one and the same. There is no choice between them.

The question should be, "Are we already sacrificing too much privacy for the sake of security?"
