Blogger phone call with Cindy Sheehan *EDITED*
Edited on Thu Aug-11-05 07:07 AM by Skinner
Here is a extremely rough transcript of the blogger conference call with Cindy Sheehan today. This is just what I was able to type while I was on the call, and I'm not a very fast typist. None of the words here are exact quotes. Rather, this is a rough outline of what was said on the call. I believe there is going to be a podcast of the call available later on meetwithcindy.org. --Skinner

Joe Trippi introduces the phone call and Bob Fertik

Bob Fertik talks briefly about meetwithcindy.org, and introduces cindy.

Cindy Sheehan: Thank you so much. I'm overwhelmed & amazed by the support. It's a miracle. It's mushroomed because of the Internet and the blogosphere. On Saturday the secret service was trying to intimidate me. Blogs spread it around. If something happens it'll be because of the Secret Service.

They can't ignore us or shut us down. Thank god for the Internet.

The mainstream media is a propaganda tool for the government. Without the Internet, we wouldn't really know what is going on. We the people have to cause the change. I never got involved before because I didn't know one person could make a difference. But now I know that one person can make a difference. Thanks to all of you.

Trippi: Tell us about your day.

Cindy Sheehan: Woke up 3:30. Thunder, lightning, rain. Got in the car and went to crawford. Sore throat and fever. But I'm feeling better, strength is coming back. We need to pace ourselves for the long haul. I had to cancel some interviews today because my voice is going out. So many people are here, from North Carolina, San Diego, Oregon, all over Texas. Texans have come out in droves. Texas is not Bush country.

Deborah White from About.com (?): Read in Kos diary that a couple days ago the Secret Service said be careful or you'll get run over by a car.

Cindy Sheehan: They said we don't want to stay there because we might get run over by a car at night.

Q: I got the impression that they were trying to intimidate you. But they don't know what they're dealing with here.

Cindy Sheehan: Secret Service came out and talked to Ann Wright (?), who is in charge of camp management. People are spontaneously coming to Crawford. Nobody else can stay here at night. Crawford town sheriff has been very supportive. Letting us use the High School stadium for rallies.

Greg from American Free Press (?): White House and CNN both reported that Cindy changed story of her meeting with the President.

Cindy Sheehan: Matt Drudge took the things from original story out of context. Vacaville Reporter (?) wrote an op-ed contradicting Drudge. Your account is true, not Matt Drudge.

Brian (?): How many people are there. How do we get there?

Cindy Sheehan: Can drive out here. (She gave directions)

Q (?): Are you receiving medical care?

Cindy Sheehan: No.

Crooks and Liars: I posted the video of O'Reilly and Malkin attacking you. Are you going on his show?

Cindy Sheehan: No. I don't like it when people lie about me. He attacks me personally about it. He asked me to go on show. My first reaction is that I'll go on if he publicly apologizes for lying about me. But my second reaction is I won't go on at all because his show is an obscenity.

Our true mission is bringing attention to the occupation of Iraq and bringing our troops home. The Bush Administration doesn't have the support of the majority of America. We do.

Q (?): We can help you with an online forum. Bring a thousand points of light to you. I'm honored that Joe Trippi has joined us. How do you see the rest of this week play out?

Cindy Sheehan: I can't even begin to guess that. Every day, every minute is a surprise. We did not plan this. Everything that happened is spontaneous. Only three things can make me leave: Meeting with the President, the end of August, or I get arrested.

Joe Trippi: Direct people to the meetwithcindy.org website.

Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky: I'm so proud of you. You're doing such an incredible job. We'll try to keep our end in the Out of Iraq caucus in Congress. I would be there with you but my daughter-in-law died last week. We're doing everything we can in Congress. The noble cause is that we can help you end this war. That's the real answer.

Cindy Sheehan: I know that too. Thank you for saying that. You know how much I love you.

Liza from Culture Kitchen (?): I just came back from first women blogger's conference. I'm touched by how you said that one person can't change the world. But one person with a million other people on the Internet can change the world. How did you get involved in blogs?

Cindy Sheehan: I still don't really understand much about blogs. But I know that I didn't just come out of the woodwork last Saturday. I've been working for peace for a long time. People on Kos encouraged me to start my own blog. I want to let everyone in the world know what's going on over there.

Dave Johnson of Seeing the Forest (?): What are you going to ask Bush if he meets with you?

Cindy Sheehan: I'm going to ask him what the noble cause was that Casey died for. I don't believe that a war of aggression is a noble cause. I want to ask him, If it's such a noble cause, why don't his daughters enlist? Stop saying that we have to honor the sacrifice the fallen by completing the mission. Because he doesn't know what the mission is. The only way to honor my son's sacrifice is to bring the soldiers home.

Peter Daou of the Daou Report: MSNBC and CNN are still leading with Natalie Holloway.

Cindy Sheehan: I had four interviews scheduled with MSNBC but two of them canceled and two didn't show up. They don't want this to be the story. A lot of people have a lot at stake in keeping the war going. If they truly care they would cover this story. But they don't want to cover it. The war should be back on the front pages. It belongs there every day, even if there isn't a grieving mother in Crawford. Without the Internet, we wouldn't know what's going on over there.

Podblog (?): I've dealt with the police before. If you do not move, they can't hurt you. They don't hurt you if you just stand still. Pick your place and don't move.

Cindy Sheehan: I'll just put my butt down and refuse to move.

Someone from London (?): You were beautiful in the Guardian today. You are our leader. We love you. We're doing what we can. How can we get emails through to you?

Cindy Sheehan: You can send them to jodie@codepinkalert.org or meetwithcindy@gmail.com

Joe Trippi: Tell people to visit www.meetwithcindy.org. Direct people there.

2. Cindy's absolutely right
Especially about "Texans have come out in droves. Texas is not B*sh country."

No, it's not and even for those who still have positive feelings for Junior, his treatment of Cindy will appall them. Not all of them, but many. Texans don't act this way. Not those who have matured past the 'Young republican' stage of stupidity, anyway.

The Texas media needs to report about the flooding of Camp Casey and Cindy being made sick by her ordeal in Crawford. That'll finish off Junior but good in the minds of Texans.

Matthew Donaldson, an independent visual artist from Auckland. “On this, the 60th anniversary of Hiroshima's bombing, my grief for all of those murdered and yet to be murdered by America's weapons - of mass destruction or otherwise - overwhelms me” said Matt.

It overwhelms me, as well, Mathew.

Peace.

59. A little more about Ann Wright, referred to above.
Thanks, Skinner!

I have met Ann Wright. She is a wonderful speaker, and a fine person.

I'm so glad she is there too.

She spoke in Houston for a Downing Street Minutes event, and the standing-room-only crowd barely would let her stop talking -- no one wanted to leave.

Here is Ann's bio:

Colonel Ann Wright was the former deputy Ambassador to Mongolia who resigned on the eve of the war with Iraq. In her letter of resignation to Secretary of State Colin Powell, she wrote that "this is the only time in my many years serving America that I have felt I cannot represent the policies of an administration of the United States."

Ann Wright was a diplomat for fifteen years, including service as the Deputy Chief of Mission in the U.S. Embassies in Sierra Leone and in Micronesia. She received the State Department’s Award for Heroism for her actions during the evacuation of 2,500 people from the civil war in Sierra Leone, the largest evacuation since the evacuation of Saigon in 1974. She was on the first State Department team to go to Kabul, Afghanistan. She has also had assignments in Somalia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Grenada and Nicaragua. Before entering the Foreign Service, she served in the Army and has a combined regular Army/Army Reserve service time of 29 years.

Ann is a member of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity.

Ray McGovern, a founder of that group, is headed toward Crawford too.

Will Pitt is there, blogging at http://www.truthout.org/cindy.shtml

Code Pink members Diane Wilson and Jodie Evans are there and, I'm told, on a hunger strike.

Brian Keeler, one of the leaders of e Pluribus Media (which helped break the Jeff Gannon/James Guckert story) is on the way from New York.

just not Bush's unjust, immoral, illegal causes.

What Casey's mother is doing is the nobelest cause of all. If Casey hadn't given his life maybe none of this would be happening.

Edited on Wed Aug-10-05 04:15 PM by AnnInLa
((The following was posted on the GDP forum by PatrioticLiberal. I went to joetrippi.com and to democrats.com, but could not find the info...also went to the radio station that is linked below, but couldn't find a mention of the counter demo. I did not look in the comments section of those websites, so I probably missed it.))

"Update <2005-8-10 14:38:27 by patrioticliberal>: As someone posted below in a comment (JUST CONFIRMED), KLFX ("KLFX 107.3 The Fox Rocks") and their group stations, as well as KWTX 1230 AM (Waco) - 1-254-776-3900 (FOX NEWS RADIO), 102.5 FM,, and one more that is forgotten at this time, will be at the PRO-BUSH/ANTI-SHEEHAN rally. They are owned by Clear Channel. The Anti-Sheehan BBQ will be in the lot next to Crawford Bank, free burgers, soft drinks ("Coca-Cola"), and everything Saturday at NOON. a host named "JACK HAMMER" will be there and apparently is helping with this event. They are inviting soldiers from the Fort Hood area to come down and say that they would be ashamed of their mother if she did what Mrs. Sheehan is doing. Protest to KLFX! Their number is 1-254-699-5000, and YES, I'm keeping that number here. It's also publicly accessible http://www.ontheradio.net/radiostations/klfxfm.aspx

Joe Trippi has posted this at JoeTrippi.com and it is crossposted at Democrats.com as a plea for help for Cindy Sheehan, who is sick."

35. That could be a gross miscalculation on their part.
Anything else that draws attention to Crawford is going to spill over on to Cindy. If media covers a "counter-demonstration" than people will become interested in what they are countering. As far as I am concerned, the more people in Crawford for either side is a boon.

62. Wouldn't it be great...
if they hold their little counter-demonstration and nobody showed up? And I'm sure the gov't controlled media would cover that to no end, which means everyone finally gets to see what is going on in Crawford. They will see a handful of Shrub supporters, and they will have to give at least some exposure to the multitudes of detractors in Cindy's camp. Maybe they can even get the guy with the "Get a brain, Morans!" sign to show up!

Shame to waste all that BBQ, though.

23. Cindy Is Beyond Thunder Dome!
Tina Turner was right, "We don't need another Hero." We need a Mom. Someone who is fed up with the lies. Someone who will no longer tolerate the arrogance. Someone who will put their foot down to say, Oh yes you will speak to me. You Little Coward! I gave you a warm, loving, bright, and lively young man. You returned to me a cold dead corpse. So oh yes you do owe me an explanation. You need to account for the difference between what I gave you and what you gave me. Somebody has been short changed and we are sure it's not Halliburton. It's my son and our troops that have been short changed. Where ever that place beyond Thunder Dome is. Cindy is there. As a nation we need to be there with her too. Cindy is the light at the end of what has been a long dark tunnel. God Bless Her! There is no place like Home. There is no place like Home. There is no place like Home.

37. I guess I'm in the minority
I would like to see her go on O Lie-ly.

I was a blind republican following "talking points" until 1998. Than with the whole Clinton thing, I actually started listening and paying attention. I'm embarressed to say I voted for Reagen twice and bush sr. before I stopped swallowing all of the bullshit and paid attention to the FACTS.

In 2001, I named my daughter Chelsea after the former first daughter.

My point is that if Cindy goes on that creepy liars show a handful of people will have thier eyes opened to the terrible shape of this country.

That is how this illegitmite white house will be exposed.....
A few people at a time.

...until she found out what O'Reilly had said about her behind her back and now she rightly refuses to appear on his show. He would've tried T-boning her, anyway, although I'm sure that Cindy would've deflected his clumsy attacks.

41. Thank you, Skinner.
I find myself fearing that somehow, for whatever unknowable reason, Cindy will somehow lose touch with the outside world. Her Diary on Kos is an enduring inspiration and I eagerly scan the 'Net for anything she says and writes.

Bush had better treat this gal with kid gloves.

47. Unable to contribute to Crawford Peace House via Pay Pal
I need some insight about contributing to Cindy Sheehan via the Crawford Peace House. http://www.CrawfordPeaceHouse.org I tried to contribute to their Pay Pal account for Cindy. It wouldn't go thru. My credit card co. said there's nothing on their end to block it. Have others here been able to contribute?

53. I had no problem earlier today.
Maybe PayPal was overwhelmed (hope hope). Try it again, or just mail a check to Crawford Peace House.

This is the beginning, isn't it? I know the anti-war movement started a long time ago, as I was in DC protesting in October of 2002, 6 months before the war started.

But it is seriously picking up momentum. This is THE story right now. It is the water cooler story. It is the 'OMG did you hear about...' story right now everywhere I go. We jsut have to pick up the torch and take it out into the streets and refuse to stop until the war does.

:bounce:

I can't wait for Sept. 24! I wish I could go to Crawford too. Can't do it though...

54. Cindy is a real hero
She's telling it like it is. Sending more of our soldiers to Iraq to kill and die for lies is not noble, it is insane and cruel. If Chimpy thinks his war is so wonderful he should send his daughters and the children of his cronies.

55. Skinner, some editing help: "Vacaville Reporter"
Cindy's hometown newspaper is the Vacaville Reporter. That's what she was saying, not "Nashville reporter". Just helping out; I used to live there.

Cindy Sheehan: Matt Drudge took the things from original story out of context. Nashville reporter (?) wrote an op-ed contradicting Drudge. Your account is true, not Matt Drudge.

57. Great Truth Statement: "Texas is not Bush Country!"
Hang-tight Cindy! While some of us can not be there, we're with you in spirit. Wish I could get down there.

Godspeed Cindy & Supporters & all the parents/family/friends who lost their loved ones, 1800 and still counting.

He is a Connecticut boy who came here to be a fake cowboy, and fake oilman. And, fake president.

67. You've got that one right! The redistricting of Texas, and the immoral
political shenanigans of Rove in Texas politics, should give one cause to question whether or not Texas is really a red state at all...
