Beautiful tribute to Cindy at "Unconfirmed Sources"
Edited on Wed Aug-10-05 02:50 PM by kliljedahl
It's normally a satire site, but not today.

Chuck Terzella Editorial: A Love Letter To Cindy Sheehan.

I admit to becoming completely fascinated by Cindy Sheehan. This woman...unprepossessing with a gentle and friendly smile, just an average lady you'd pass on the street, maybe nod to as you went by, nothing really remarkable about her at all. But with any luck, Cindy Sheehan just might be the woman to change the course of American, and by extension, world politics.

I honestly don't think I'm engaging in hyperbole here. Sure, Americans have been watching the growing death toll in Iraq with some concern and unease for several months now. Yes, the President's poll numbers regarding his handling of Iraq have been dropping, but in general Americans don't really seem to care about Iraq; it only makes the news these days when large numbers of Americans get killed all together, that's interesting, but only for a day or so. After that it's on to some beautiful missing teenager in Aruba, something to get their prurient juices flowing.

Also, deep down inside, I think most of the people who initially supported the war are now embarrassed by it. They're embarrassed because they allowed George W. Bush to play to their fears, to lie to them, to use them and now they don't want to think about it. It's become that thing you saw on TV that you absolutely had to have but didn't need, that you paid too much for and it doesn't work well or fit right so you stick it in the closet and pretend it doesn't exist.

But, much to the dismay of all involved, Cindy Sheehan is becoming the one person in the family who keeps opening the closet door and asking, "Why did you buy this thing? How much did it cost? When will you ever be able to pay off the interest on the credit you used to get it?"

We all love Cindy. She represents all of us out here who feel so helpless to stop the insanity.

...it only makes the news these days when large numbers of Americans get killed all together, that's interesting, but only for a day or so." --Chuck Terzella

Since when does the corporate monopoly news ever reflect what Americans "really care about"?

Almost never. We really should beware of this trap--and it IS a trap, and a big one--a trap so big that a whole election fell into it, and a whole war. The trap that what the news monopolies show IS "national reality" and that it reflects what the majority of Americans care about. No question that many people believe that it does--have been fooled that it does--and often put their own thoughts, opinions and dissent aside, thinking no one else cares. And there is no question that people turn to it, as if it were an umbilical cord to "our nation," and that it influences what gets discussed over backyard fences and in other forums.

But it is NOT reality--and is not even close to being reality. It is highly manipulated to sell you...the war, Bush, global corporate predators who are outsourcing your job, and all manner of lies, bullshit and very well thought White House, war profiteer and corporate "talking points." And it is specifically designed to make you feel powerless and isolated.

If you use what's in "the news" as your gage of what Americans care about, you will come up very wrong on many, many fundamental issues.

For instance, here are some news monopoly polls showing that an overwhelming majority of Americans disapprove of every major Bush policy, foreign and domestic, way up in the 60% to 70% range, but the results of which NEVER GET DISCUSSED, or puzzled over in "the news." What could it mean that so many people disagree with Bush on so many issues?

58% of the American people opposed the Iraq war BEFORE the invasion. I'll never forget that stat. Feb. '03. Before all the lies were exposed, before all the horror and costs were known. 58%! Across the board in all polls.

The great majority of Americans didn't trust Bush THEN, way back then.

63% of the American people oppose torture UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. May '04. A strong people, not easily frightened, sticking to their sense of justice and ethics and lawfulness, despite relentless fearmongering.

You name the issue. The Iraq war. Torture. Social Security. The deficit. Women's rights. Major, major disagreement with and disapproval of Bush.

It's not thin. It's deep. It's not just recently. It stretches back at least to Feb. '03. It's not just a few points, but way the hell up there, in the stratosphere of disagreement. And it's on all major issues.

I don't think what we have here is a people who don't care. I think what we have here is a people that has been DISENFRANCHISED. A people who are NOT HEARD. A majority will that is NOT BEING IMPLEMENTED. A population of deeply caring, thinking people whose views are NOT reflected by the war profiteers and fatcat news monopolists who control what we think other Americans think!

Their own polls--and we never hear this talked about, or read it remarked upon, that the vast majority of Americans disagree with Bush on EVERYTHING!

--------

Election system reform, friends. Election system reform. Then we bust these news monopolies, and reclaim our public airwaves for public debate and for TRULY "mainstream" news and entertainment.
