Democrats Want Independent Probe of CIA Leak

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats called on Monday for an independent review of charges that a Bush administration leak exposed an undercover CIA (news - web sites) officer, saying a highly partisan Justice Department (news - web sites) could not bring credibility to the probe.



Some of the 10 Democrats vying for the right to challenge President Bush (news - web sites) in 2004 pounced on the public identification of the wife of former U.S. Ambassador Joseph Wilson as a CIA officer as a sign the administration was playing politics with national security.


They called for an outside probe, saying that Attorney General John Ashcroft (news - web sites) would have a conflict of interest if his department were to investigate high-level White House officials.
